The stories are not that unique but the writing is superb! ( )

An honest look at the experience of immigrating to America and the experience of being a second-generation American. Rather than portraying the most critical moments of characters' lives firsthand, Lahiri conveys their emotional impact by having characters reflect on them later, a technique that makes their emotional lives both more subtle and more completely and honestly rendered.

Bengali and American cultures clash in different ways for the different generations, and we are really allowed to see and sympathize with both sides of the story. ( )

I loved the novel. It rang very close to me as a child of immigrants myself, albeit from a different culture. The struggle of maintaining the connection to your home country while being entirely immersed in the culture of the one you’ve lived in all your life is a familiar one to me.

It’s lessened over the years, but I always felt slightly out of place in the US. I don’t consider it my home - I don’t share any history or familial culture with it and thus I don’t feel any patriotic sentiment towards it. At the same time though, I’m markedly out of place in my home country. It’s not home either. People instantly peg me as foreign, and I don’t have the years of growing up there to know what it’s actually like to live there.

That’s to say, this book spoke to me. At the same time though, it brought in pieces of the second-generation immigrant experience that I am not familiar with. Except for the occasional verbal slip-up where my accent leaks through, I pass as what people expect when they see an American. No one’s ever been weird about my heritage, or made me feel less American.

The many tough themes that this book brings up - from the immigrant experience to relationships - are artfully woven in with the strong (but very fallible) characters. I highly recommend this book.

I started it and couldn't get sucked into the story. I suspect it was the wrong book at the wrong time. I might like it better later, but I'm not likely to try it because there are other books that I WANT to read waiting for me. ( )

Jhumpa Lahiri's quietly dazzling new novel, ''The Namesake,'' is that rare thing: an intimate, closely observed family portrait that effortlessly and discreetly unfolds to disclose a capacious social vision.

The reader should realize himself that it could not have happened otherwise, and that to give him any other name was quite out of the question.

For being a foreigner, Ashima is beginning to realize, is a sort of lifelong pregnancy--a perpetual wait , a constant burden, a continuous feeling out of sorts.
Until now it has not occurred to Gogol that names die over time, that they perish just as people do.
"Remember that you and I made this journey, that we went together to a place where there was nowhere left to go."
"Now I know why he went to Cleveland, " she tells people, refusing even in death, to utter her husband's name. "He was teaching me how to live alone."
