The sequel to Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries takes place in 1910. Emily, accompanied by two other dryadology scholars and her niece (Emily’s self-appointed assistant), heads to the Austrian alps to investigate the disappearance of two dryadologists decades earlier. But Emily isn’t motivated not by professional curiosity over a fifty-year-old mystery, at least not chiefly, but by the belief that it will lead to answers that will help with a more pressing problem.

Like the first book, this one also has delightful, cosy, fairytale vibes, and like the first, I don’t have much I urgently want to say about it. I like Emily’s first-person narration. I like the juxtaposition of the scholarly and the fae. I like the way certain plot developments feel like something out of a fairytale and yet are their own thing.
“Did you enchant my pencil?” I demanded.
“I enchanted all of your pencils,” he said without opening his eyes. “You always have at least one upon your person. I knew they would come in handy.” He added, as I continued to stare at him, “Well, I can’t carry a bloody sword around with me everywhere,” misunderstanding entirely.
“Why didn’t you enchant your own pencils?” I groused.
“I would have, but I can never remember where I put them.”

This is the second installment of Emily Wilde’s journals of her experiences with fae creatures. I adore this series and can’t wait for more! The story is compelling and the characters are wonderfully wrought. ( )

So, I think I like the potential & setup of these books & not so much the execution.
Still love Wendell (& his cat!!!!) but really dislike Emily and the romance is almost nonexistent.
Like it’s ok I guess? I also might read the 3rd literally just to see more of Wendell & his cat ( )

Another delightful romp with Emily and Wendell!

The footnotes still annoy me, but I ignored them for the most part. I think it would have been better to write a companion book of short stories, similar to Tales of the Peculiar by Ransom Riggs, instead of forcing them unnecessarily into the book. ( )
