The One Where He Talks About His Annoying Professor, In A Nice (But Racist?) Way:

I once had a social work professor who was a gerontologist; born in Japan, he mentioned at least once or twice how older adults are treated better there than here in the USA, although like many feminists who don’t always like women being lumped together as a group, anticipating only evil coming from it, he didn’t usually like older adults being considered together as a group. Anyway, I was once a teenager and I thought that if I confessed to the enlightened Professor that I really got how people could be rude and disrespectful to those older than they are because I used to be that way, it would ease his considerable burdens and maybe even make him like me. It didn’t come out that way, however, and his reaction was more along the lines of, Oh god not another ageist! (After a little back and forth he accepted my apology to the extent of forgetting about the whole thing. I left the incident with a number of somewhat racist subconscious associations about the stiff, inflexible, and oh so perfect Japanese.)

My experience with this book and its gendered confessions was similar in some ways, with me playing the Professor this time around, and Don Piper the awkward apologizer. Don’s like, Hey I used to be an evangelical cad, so maybe if I fess up about how I used to treat my wife then I’ll ease people’s burdens about gender in the church, maybe even give them a reason to like me. But I heard all that and I’m like, Don Draper reborn! Evangelical sexism, like a religious version of “Mad Men”! Ugh!

Of course, in retrospect it’s obvious to me that I was merely ill serving where I had so resented being ill served. If you really are That Guy in the church and you never changed, then maybe you don’t make such a big deal out of the fact that your wife got the short end of the stick, yeah? I mean, he was probably a little awkward in that he never made any explicit gender-in-the-church point, but what relatively little he offers us isn’t compatible with, you know, Men Never Fail. All real men are true and kind and good, but where there are women, there are bitches, unless they keep their heads down and do as they’re told and don’t make noise.... No, I don’t think that that’s Don Piper anymore. I haven’t thought it was Paul in a number of years, even though it is a sort of person, a type.

....................

It’s also one of those books-by-someone-who’s-not-an-intellectual, which are very often worth reading. The only really bad simple books are the coffee table books that preen, 365 Sports Cars That You Must Drive, you know the preening and posing. A good simple book is a worthy companion to Tolstoy or whatever you like, just as much as the grammarian.

.... Because it’s by no means easy to actually be something regardless of who you are and what your training is.

Interesting story about a minister's brush with death during an automobile accident. He appeared dead to the emergency personnel who arrived on the scene. They reluctantly let another minister into the wrecked car to pray for the mangled body in the wreckage. The praying minister discovered that the body was still alive. ( )

Don Piper spent 90 minutes in heaven before being returned to earth through prayer. His subsequent recovery from a near fatal car accident in 1989 was grueling, but as a minister he discovered that his encounter in the afterlife could bring peace and ease to those in pain. ( )

In the ten years since 90 Minutes in Heaven was published, millions of people worldwide have read the incredible true story of Don Piper's experience with death and life--and in reading they have found their own lives changed.

After a semi-truck collided with Don Piper's car, he was pronounced dead at the scene. For the next ninety minutes, he experienced the glories of heaven. Back on earth, a passing minister felt led to stop and pray for the accident victim even though he was told Piper was dead. Miraculously, Piper came back to life, and the pleasure of heaven was replaced by a long and painful recovery.

When a Baptist minister is killed in a car accident, he spends 90 minutes in heaven before returning to a life of pain and healing of his wounds. He doesn't understand his purpose until his experiences start to help others. ( )
