Title: Savage Country (The Last Gunfighter #13)
Author: William W. Johnstone
E-book: 289 pages
Year: 2016
Publisher: Pinnacle Books
My rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Frank Morgan, also known as The Drifter, is man without a home or a wife. However, Frank never considers himself alone as he travels with a horse and a dog. Wherever Frank lands, his animal companions help him stay alone as he has his horse trained to come with a whistle or command, and Dog can be as quiet as Frank when he needs to be.
Frank has been asked to help his son Conrad Browning when Conrad finds that building a spur line for the railroad is anything but easy. When these two men meet, though they are father and son, tension is high. If Conrad has any say, words are few. Frank decides to lend his son a hand, and his decision lands him with more problems and bullets than anticipated. Frank has to locate who is stirring up trouble for Conrad whether it is renegade Indians or gunman, or both.
Here is where Conrad meets Rebel Callahan, a woman who is not like his fiancée and fear doesn’t enter her thinking. Rebel can ride and shoot like her brothers then turn around and look like a real lady when she dresses up. Frank, Rebel and Conrad are about to uncover a man’s plot to bring death and destruction to Browning Enterprises and Frank Morgan if it can be done.
The Last Gunfighter series is nonstop western action and thrills! Whether readers have read any books or none, pick up a book in the series and I guarantee you’ll be hooked! The interaction and history of father and son, Frank and Conrad, is revealed slowly in the early books in this series. But the author has done such a good job, audiences can grab a book and feel like they have known this leading character for ages. Ride into Johnstone country, sit a spell, and enjoy engaging tales!
