For Lewis and Wren, their first year of marriage is also their last. A few weeks after their wedding, Lewis receives a rare diagnosis. He will retain most of his consciousness, memories, and intellect, but his physical body will gradually turn into a great white shark. As Lewis develops the features and impulses of one of the most predatory creatures in the ocean, his complicated artist's heart struggles to make peace with his unfulfilled dreams. At first, Wren internally resists her husband's fate. Is there a way for them to be together after Lewis changes? Then, a glimpse of Lewis's developing carnivorous nature activates long-repressed memories for Wren, whose story vacillates between her childhood living on a houseboat in Oklahoma, her time with a college ex-girlfriend, and her unusual friendship with a woman pregnant with twin birds. Woven throughout this bold novel is the story of Wren's mother, Angela, who becomes pregnant with Wren at fifteen in an abusive relationship amidst her parents' crumbling marriage. In the present, all of Wren's grief eventually collides, and she is forced to make an impossible choice.… (mere)

Every year there seems to be one book I proselytize about it. For 2024, it's going to be Shark Heart. I was a little put off by the premise--a man mutates into a shark--but I was sucked in within a few pages. Habeck had me believing that humans can mutate into animals. It's a great metaphor for living with an illness, but at no time was the novel heavy-handed. It was original, never forced. Flowed smoothly. I truly think everyone should be reading this novel! ( )

I forgot to record when I finished this book but I think it was in March.

Gigi also read it, at my urging. In fact, she got around to it before I did.

I really love the imagination of the concept of this tale. It strikes me as a mix of The Time Traveler's Wife (because you must suspend reality), and Big Fish, and Harry's Trees. I would label this an Adult Fairy Tale.

I really enjoyed this book. ( )

Scene One

Lewis: In the early days after I left New York, I would ruminate, doubt all my choices. But when I met you, I began to thank my failure. Maybe failing was a kind of miracle. Maybe everything happened just right.

Wren: You re an excellent teacher. You've said so yourself: everything in New York led you to what you should have been doing all along if you weren't so stubborn. And you're still so young. You can do anything. You can act, perform in plays again, if you want. I could support us if you want to try again.
