In this beautiful and moving novel about family, love, and growing up, Ann Patchett once again proves herself one of America's finest writers. "Patchett leads us to a truth that feels like life rather than literature."?The Guardian In the spring of 2020, Lara's three daughters return to the family's orchard in Northern Michigan. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage and a romance years before at a theater company called Tom Lake. As Lara recalls the past, her daughters examine their own lives and relationship with their mother, and are forced to reconsider the world and everything they thought they knew. Tom Lake is a meditation on youthful love, married love, and the lives parents have led before their children were born. Both hopeful and elegiac, it explores what it means to be happy even when the world is falling apart. As in all of her novels, Ann Patchett combines compelling narrative artistry with piercing insights into family dynamics. The result is a rich and luminous story, told with profound intelligence and emotional subtlety, that demonstrates once again why she is one of the most revered and acclaimed literary talents working today.… (mere)

Beautiful family saga. Interesting exploration of the past and how choices affect our future. I enjoyed this book more then Dutch House. ( )

Audiobook narrated by Meryl Streep--a fantastic listening experience. ( )

Tom Lake is the site of a summer stock theater. The actors and the other characters in the book revolve around Lara, who spent one summer at the theater and then, despite showing great promise as an actress, gives up acting entirely. ( )

I listened to the audiobook version.

Tom Lake is about a mother, a Michigan cherry farmer, relaying her life story to her adult daughters. She was an actress in her youth and had a romance with a later famous actor. The reader gets to hear way more details than her daughters do. This novel is slowly paced especially at the beginning, on the verge of boring. The plot thickens but the pace does not and we really want to know what has happened to the characters, as do the daughters. The mom is messing with us all with her slow unfolding. I enjoyed the book, but I can see why some would be bored to tears. it's a theater book. If you know nothing about plays and have no interest in the process of staging a play, and the lives of performers, this book isn't for you. Patchett also nailed the relationship between the young adult daughters and their mother. The ending was satisfying if a little too neat and tidy, and there's lots of deeper meaning of life fodder here for discussion and pondering. The audiobook was performed by Merrill Streep and it was the best reading I've ever heard. The new gold standard. ( )

Lara's 3 daughters want her to tell the story of when she dated a famous actor (before he was famous.) As they listen, they tell part of the story as they have heard it before. Their dad adds to the story. Their mother lets more of the story out but keeps a part of the story secret knowing she will never tell that part. Told between the past and the present, we all find out the whole story.

I liked this book. It took me a while to get into it but once I did, it was hard to put down. I liked how Lara did not lie to herself when she was no longer right for the parts she got in summer stock. She has no illusions about Peter Duke, the soon-to-be famous actor, but he is a jerk--big time. I liked his brother Sebastian. He comes into Lara's life three times that are important. He is always cleaning up after Peter and making sure that Lara is okay. He does bring some truths to light in Lara's life that Lara did not see and, at times, surprised her. I liked Joe, her husband. He is the steadying hand for her. Her daughters were each different. Their personalities were very different from one another.

The story is a bittersweet story for Peter. I found it sad for Sebastian and shed a few tears. Joe and Lara and their girls were okay--some happy times, some sad, some so-so. It worked out for them. I was glad they were there for Sebastian. ( )
