The Lost Wagon is the starkly honest representation of one man's hope of finding a better life for his family. Deeply in debt and worried that his children will be forced to struggle all their lives to make ends meet, Joe hears stories of free land in Oregon and a better way of life. The tale of the "promised land" does not move his wife Emma to support their leaving all they have behind until a catastrophe leaves them no other choice. Intimate and glorious in its description of everyday events, thoughts and hopes, this story is an excellent representation of what life was really like in the "good old days." It brings us back to a simpler time, before texting instead of talking and not knowing who your neighbor is. Not an easier time, but certainly a different way of life. Fathers' still wanted the best for their children, mothers still worried about sick babies, and couples still loved and supported each other. Elegantly descriptive, it captures the gruelling tedium of daily life along with the straightforward characterization of people and events. The way West to a better life is filled with perils: blizzards, outlaws, stampedes, Indians and starvation, but the determination and courage of this family group, alone on the prairie, is a gripping listen.… (mere)

Jim Kjelgaard was one of my favorite authors when I was a boy. His books were full of adventures outdoors and nature. The Lost Wagon was written for adults. It touches on mature themes of commitment loyalty self-sacrifice and persistence. I was surprised at how well he covered these themes. I still prefer his juvenile fiction but I would have liked to tell him this was well done. Unfortunately Kjelgaard died in 1959. ( )

This is the story of a family headed west from Missouri, alone, on the Oregon Trail. It's a fairly decent tale, though, in my opinion, not this author's best work. ( )

When he had guided his plow halfway down the furrow, a bar-winged fly alighted just above Joe Tower's right ear. He felt it crawling, its presence irritating through the sweat that beaded his forehead and dampened his temples, and he knew that he should swat it away.
