"A couple who broke up months ago make a pact to pretend to still be together for their annual weeklong vacation with their best friends in this glittering and wise new novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Emily Henry. Harriet and Wyn have been the perfect couple since they met in college-they go together like salt and pepper, honey and tea, lobster and rolls. Except, now-for reasons they're still not discussing-they don't. They broke up six months ago. And still haven't told their best friends. Which is how they find themselves sharing a bedroom at the Maine cottage that has been their friend group's yearly getaway for the last decade. Their annual respite from the world, where for one vibrant, blue week they leave behind their daily lives; have copious amounts of cheese, wine, and seafood; and soak up the salty coastal air with the people who understand them most. Only this year, Harriet and Wyn are lying through their teeth while trying not to notice how desperately they still want each other. Because the cottage is for sale and this is the last week they'll all have together in this place. They can't stand to break their friends' hearts, and so they'll play their parts. Harriet will be the driven surgical resident who never starts a fight, and Wyn will be the laid-back charmer who never lets the cracks show. It's a flawless plan (if you look at it from a great distance and through a pair of sunscreen-smeared sunglasses). After years of being in love, how hard can it be to fake it for one week...in front of those who know you best?"--… (mere)

This is yet another novel that has an intriguing storyline, a few fascinating characters and an engaging dual-timeline structure — but is simply too long. (A friendly note to best-selling authors: some tales are best told in tightly written narratives that come in under 300 pages.). Even though romance novels are not my thing, this interesting and touching story about six friends who struggle to preserve their past dynamics was generally satisfying. My two problems: Wyn’s self-deprecating obsession is charming in the early chapters, becomes mildly irritating in the middle, and ends up being intolerable near the end. Also, the overly “clever” sarcastic back-and-forth between Wynn and Harriet that seems to surface every other page is literary overkill.” Finally, it’s all a bit, well, predictable. “Happy Place“ would have been a four-star read had it been trimmed down by about 25 percent. Hit me right where I didn’t even know it hurt. In the most beautiful, gut-wrenching way.
Thank you Emily Henry for holding up so many mirrors to my face and also some free therapy. Your metaphors made me audibly gasp.

(I read from page 60 to finish from around 7 pm to 4 am, literally could not physically put this book down if my house were on fire.) ( )

I can't believe I waited so long to dive into this book. I opted for the audiobook and fell completely in love with every aspect of it. This was my introduction to Emily Henry's writing, and it's clear it won't be my last. Everyone, PLEASE read this beautifully crafted romcom—it's a whirlwind of emotions, guaranteeing both laughter and tears while rooting for the characters.

Fake dating ✔️ Second chance romance ✔️
Five Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The story centers around Harriet and Wyn, (side note, love that Harriet’s sister’s name is Eloise. Why? My daughter had two guinea pigs named Harriet and Eloise 😁) who have been seen as the ideal pair since their college days, perfectly complementing each other in every way. However, they've recently parted ways without discussing the reasons with anyone, not even their closest friends.

This twist of fate has them sharing a room during their annual getaway with friends to a beloved Maine cottage—a tradition filled with relaxation, indulgence, and cherished moments. This year, with their private separation from each other, they find themselves pretending all is well with their relationship for the betterment of their friends, which proves quite a challenge, given their deep, unresolved feelings for one another.

Wyn and Harriet's love for each other truly touched me. 🥹 Their love is tangible, expressed through subtle actions and deep understanding rather than grand gestures or passion. The dual timelines, showcasing their blooming love alongside depicting their current break up, were torturous at times, but it also made the story so captivating and made me adore them and their love story all the more.

The story is not just a romance; it's a reflection on friendship, growth, and the hard truths about life's transitions. It's really a worthwhile read and I would highly suggest it.

Quotes:

~ “You are in all of my happiest places.”

~ “Love means constantly saying you're sorry, and then doing better.”

~ “Like even when something beautiful breaks, the making of it still matters.”

~ “Things change, but we stretch and grow and make room for one another.

Our love is a place we can always come back to, and it will be waiting, the same as it ever was.

You belong here. ”

~ “How many universes do you think we’re together in?”

“Higher than either of us can count.”

“No," he says quietly. "In every universe, it's you for me. Even if it's not me for you.”

~ “I understood then, the immense honor it is to hurt like she does. To have loved someone so much that the taste of maple syrup can make you cry and laugh at the same time.”

~ “I want my life to be like-like making pottery. I want to enjoy it while it's happening, not just for where it might get me eventually.” ( )

The only thing I hated was the ending. I won’t say why for spoiler reasons but like….. just, no. ( )

Wow...this was my first Emily Henry book, and there's no way I can't not give this five stars. This book really hit home for me in several different ways. I saw myself in Harriet, and I only wish I can do what she does at the end of this book. I sobbed a lot reading this book, and I can only say that I'm excited to read Emily's other books yet afraid of how they're going to wreck me. ( )
