In Strength for the Journey, Diana Butler Bass illustrates the dynamic strength and persistence of mainline Protestantism. While many baby boomers left the church, only to come back later in life, Bass was a "stayer" who witnessed the struggles and changes and found much there that was meaningful. Offering thought-provoking portraits of eight parishes she attended over two decades, she explores the major issues that have confronted mainline denominations, congregations, and parishioners during those years--from debates over women clergy to conflicts about diversity and community to scrimmages between tradition and innovation.… (mere)

This is a very attractive book, follwoing the faith journey of an author, who has become a noteworthy relgious writer. Diana Butler Bass. is a convert to the Episcopal Church, who found her journey to be rich enough to be set into words, and we all be appreciative of this. She has a very personal style and is very honest, but she doesn't demean, which is good. As start out being an Evangelical, which is the Episcopal Church, is kown as being Low Church, but she begins to discover the Catholic (High Church) and Broad Church (social justice) strands as she moves around and discovers the various ways that Episcopalians can live out their call to Christ.
This is her personal story living, growing, and worshipping in various congregations in California, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. She well describes the awkwardness of change from evolving congregations to rectors that don't match the people they are serving. The foreward is by Phyllis Tickle. ( )
