Whoa! What a wonderful book by a wonderful author.

From time to time Sapkowski gets very cheeky in this Witcher instalment, and is always very witty and so funny. I literally laughed out loud several times with the subtextual humour and the cunning devices he applies to speak directly to the reader.

The part where he tells us the biggest part of the chase after Ciri comes from no less than three different narrators in different settings, points of view and times in the future, which allows him to keep the pace extremely high while allowing you to revel in many details at the same time.

I also enjoyed that he didn't shun to dip his toes into some Dostoyevskian philosophy on the effects of the absence of a higher moral authority (like deities) on concepts like revenge, ethics, good and evil.

Overall, I devoured this part of the Witcher saga and where the [b:previous book|18656031|Baptism of Fire (The Witcher #5)|Andrzej Sapkowski|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1443279182s/18656031.jpg|1877750] didn't please me so much, this one completely made up for it. I considered five stars for a while, but that would be unfair I guess towards giants like [a:Martin|346732|George R.R. Martin|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1351944410p2/346732.jpg] or [a:Tolkien|18190113|Tolkien JRR|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png] I guess. For all his merit, Sapkowski doesn't tower that high for me with The Witcher. ( )

I listened to the audio narrated well by Peter Kenny. As I've said before this book is not easy to follow in audio form as the author jumps viewpoints and timeframes frequently and if your not paying close attention you can easily get lost.

Ciri's friends and enemies are all hunting her, we learn about what befell her through various interrogations and Ciri's own story telling, interwoven together.

While I found some parts of the story interesting and some things horrific, it seemed to plod along very slowly. There are some interesting reveals but the story doesn't seemed to move forward very far after listening for over sixteen hours.

Personal note: When a character wishes Trigeminal Nerve on her I thought it was heinous. As I suffer from Trigeminal Neuralgia, which is a very rare painful condition. I understand fully how terrible that wish was.

The politics of the books has become so wide and complicated that it is difficult to keep track of it. Unfortunately, it's also sort of boring. It's almost like the book has a heartbeat - Super interesting recounting of tales with wonder and glory in which we are able to see the characters we care about; then deep lulls where we catch up with intricate political situations woven by characters that are, frankly, one dimensional and not so interesting.

I'm hoovering between three and four stars. ( )

This series reads as a set of three, and a set of five. The first three have an entertaining, jumpy, short story feel, with the following five more serious books making up a set of novels. The first three are much more fun. Book four of that five is the best yet with Ciri coming into her own and going through the worse trials, Gerait and Yennifer pursuing her for the right reasons with plenty of villains snapping at all their heels. Though the way the author writes and presents these stories receives mixed reactions, I like the non-chronological story telling. There were a few slower sequences that felt like a bit of an info dump, but otherwise I loved all the story elements. ( )

4/5 estrellas.

«Col tuo sangue.»
