Summary:
In this story, Arthur ends up getting the hiccups. He tries different things and takes advice from all his friends on how to get rid of them. No matter what he tries, nothing works. D.W., Arthur's sister, offers to help but he keeps telling her that she can't help him. Later, to his surprise, she proves to him that she does in fact know how to help him get rid of his hiccups.

Personal Reaction:
Hiccups are a nuisance that we have all had to deal with. As a child, I also remember trying silly things to get rid of them just as Arthur did. At the end of this story, it made me giggle to see how D.W. helps Arthur get rid of his hiccups as this is the way I would help someone else get rid of them too. It seems to never fail. I loved how the illustrations are simple and the word "HIC" is capitalized in bubble letters with a shaky appearance to hep the reader feel and remember the hiccup experience.

Classroom Extension Ideas:
1. We all have had the hiccups. I can have students write a story about a time that they had the hiccups. What happened? How did you get rid of them? How long did they last?
2. At the end of the story, Arthur's hiccups were gone, but now D.W. had them. I could have students draw a picture of how they think that Arthur will help D.W. get rid of her hiccups. ( )

Arthur's Hiccups is an engaging book for young readers. It's content is simple enough for young children to understand, yet the subject matter remains engaging for readers. The book highlights the trials and tribulations encountered by young Arthur as he tries to rid himself of an annoying case of hiccups. The incidents that ensue are charming and will entertain all readers.
