Fiction. Literature. Hailed as one of the year's top five novels by Time, and selected as one of the best books of the year by nearly all major newspapers, national bestseller Peace Like a River captured the hearts of a nation in need of comfort. "A rich mixture of adventure, tragedy, and healing," Peace Like a River is "a collage of legends from sources sacred and profane -- from the Old Testament to the Old West, from the Gospels to police dramas" (Ron Charles, The Christian Science Monitor). In "lyrical, openhearted prose" (Michael Glitz, The New York Post), Enger tells the story of eleven-year-old Reuben Land, an asthmatic boy who has reason to believe in miracles. Along with his sister and father, Reuben finds himself on a cross-country search for his outlaw older brother who has been controversially charged with murder. Their journey is touched by serendipity and the kindness of strangers, and its remarkable conclusion shows how family, love, and faith can stand up to the most terrifying of enemies, the most tragic of fates. Leif Enger's "miraculous" (Valerie Ryan, The Seattle Times) novel is a "perfect book for an anxious time ... of great literary merit that nonetheless restores readers' faith in the kindness of stories" (Marta Salij, Detroit Free Press).… (mere)

Need to increase my rating, because I keep coming back to this book in conversation. I don't think it struck me, when I first read it, how impactful it would be.

It is difficult to write books in which God is a character. It is easy to make God in the author's image, adding too much ex machina to the deus. Human characters pray, God does something, characters Learn Lessons. Maybe there's even a Surprise.

This book didn't do that. It portrayed God as something other, something out past the edge of human understanding. It doesn't have all the answers; it leaves the reader uncomfortable. ( )

hmmm....there were parts in this book it seemed to drag for me, and then the action would pick back up. By the last third I could not put it down. If you like the West and lots of old western references, you would love the book. For me, that was not a strength of the book. ( )

A rare DNF. This wasn't a book I thought I'd really like, but sometimes I try those books anyway; and sometimes I'm wrong. Not this time. I couldn't care about the characters, plot, or themes, and there were many parts I found hokey or irritating. I'm also not fond of fiction that uses a woman's rape to add drama to a man's story. That's not a spoiler, it happens almost immediately. Skimming ahead, I'm happy with my decision to put it down. ( )

Rereading. Love the prose, the characters. The story meanders like a river until it gets to rapids and places difficult to navigate. Enger is firmly at the helm of the story. ( )

This is a beautiful coming of age story. It explores themes of faith and family. I'm not usually one for magical realism, but it either worked for me here or maybe just didn't bother me enough to detract from the story. The narrator pointing out potentially supernatural events more than once with the phrase "make of that what you will" repeated each time did wear a little thin.

I loved the character of the narrator's little sister, Swede - a smart, spunky, precocious kid. I loved that Reuben was self-aware enough (at least in retrospect) to recognize the times he was selfish or immature. I liked the allusions to biblical stories interspersed through the narrative.

I read some reviews in which reviewers didn't appreciate that we don't get to know the big brother, Davy, very well. I think that's kind of on purpose. We are introduced to and see one view of him through Reuben's young eyes, and then as we get to know Davy a little better through his actions, we might change our view of him a bit.

It's a bit of an old-fashioned story, but it's well-written. The audiobook narration was good. The story and the beautiful passages sprinkled through the book kept me engaged and wanting to read on. ( )

To Robin
The country ahead is as wild a spread
As ever we're likely to see

The horses are dancing to start the advance--
Won't you ride on with me?

From my first breath in this world, all I wanted was a good set of lungs and the air to fill them with - given circumstances, you might presume, for an American baby of the twentieth century.

So thoughtlessly we sling on our destinies.
Thinking of supper, I asked, “You want us to do anything, Dad?”
“Persevere,” he said.
I’m sorry if you thought better of me, but the fact is I spent whole hours imagining alarming humiliations for those kids - big dumb kids, always with effortless all-star lungs. … It’s true. No grudge ever had a better nurse.
I couldn’t put words to it, but Swede, as usual, could.
This still happens with Swede and me. I’ll lack a word, and she’ll dump out a bushel of them.
“My sympathies,” Dad said. “Appreciated but gratuitous,” the woman replied – and Swede would have loved her forever for that phrase alone –
