"A Lincoln whom no other man than Carl Sandburg could have given us." --Mark Van Doren, New York Herald Tribune Book Review Originally published in six volumes, which sold more than one million copies, Carl Sandburg's Abraham Lincoln was praised as the most noteworthy historical biography of Sandburg's generation. He later distilled this monumental work into one volume that critics and readers alike consider his greatest work of nonfiction, as well as the most distinguished, authoritative biography of Lincoln ever published. Growing up in an Illinois prairie town, Sandburg listened to stories of old-timers who had known Lincoln. By the time this single-volume edition was competed, he had spent a lifetime studying, researching, and writing about our sixteenth president. His extraordinary portrait brings fully to life the country lawyer who would become one of the most influential and beloved presidents of the American republic. this was such a pleasure to read. Some may quibble that it has "apochrophyl" stories, but even those tell something about the character explored and thier impact on their surroundings and they are identified as such.
It was a joy to read ( )

An interesting take on Lincoln's life. Written in the metaphoric language of a poet rather than a historian, but coupled with numerous quotes from Lincoln and his contemporaries. The quotes are from both private sources such as letters and diaries; and from contemporary publications such as newspapers, magazines, etc. ( )

Sandburg is a writer of poetic, flowing prose. His research was deep and wide. His biography of Lincoln, then, became the biography of a generation, either in his multi-volume version, or the abridged one-volume version here. Sandburg's Lincoln is a man of principle, always fond of a joke, a user of parables to make points, and a competent war leader. This Lincoln is free of some of the psychoanalytical musings of later biographers, or the charges of racism, or a whole host of modern biographical conventions.

A solid read, engaging too. I believe you must first read Sandburg's biography of Lincoln before you go on and read more modern bios. It allows you to see how our perceptions of Lincoln and what makes a good biography has changed over time. Like me, too, you may find your admiration and appreciation for Lincoln growing too as you read.

This abridgment has nice, old-fashioned text, a short note on sources, and an index. Some tiny photographs are strewn throughout the text here and there. ( )

The prose is lush and this single volume was edited down from six volumes in total. But Lincoln is the chief ornament of American civilization so far and I enjoyed a very reliable biography. Read with the Kearns work on the political Lincoln, I think it is time well spent. ( )

A wonderful work. As a reader, I came to appreciate Lincoln the man through the skill of Sandburg. Sandburg has so well erased his fingerprints from the biography that you are reading. Instead you are watching the development of character in the man who became arguably the greatest of Americans. ( )

To Harry and Marion Dolores Pratt, a handsome team of Lincoln scholars, who gave time and care to the new manuscript of the Prairie Years, wherefore the author is responsible for possible inaccuracies or errors --
To Paul M. Angle, a hardened veteran in the Lincoln Field, a man of good will who can be relentlessly logical while hoping he is not "magisterial" in tone --
To Benjamin P. Thomas, a ball player and farmer who is a man of learning and integrity, possessed by Lincoln's dream of "man's vast future," a citizen with a deep and keen anxiety about the American Dream --
To Allan Nevins, whose four volume Ordeal of the Union and Emergence of Lincoln are a massive and vivid presentation of the fourteen-year national scenes in which Lincoln moved in silence or speech until his first inaugural --
To the departed friends Lloyd Lewis, Oliver Barrett, Alf Harcourt, Stevie Benét, Jim Randall, Douglas Freeman, Henry Horner, Jake Buchbinder, whose shadows linger and whose fellowship endures --
