Long book but a fast read. Tells the story of Addie Larue, a 23 year old French woman who in 1714 makes a pact with a Dark Force in order to avoid a planned marriage to a widower in her small town. As with all devil's pacts, she doesn't read the fine print and finds she has agreed to live forever without aging, but at the price of being forgotten immediately by everyone she meets. Unable to own anything or pick up a relationship where it left off the day before (or the moment before if she leaves the room), she is left to wander Europe and America, rootless. The only long-term connection she has is with the entity she names Luc, essentially the Devil, who visits irregularly on the anniversary of the 1714 deal and tries to convince Addie to surrender, accept that this life isn't worth living, and finally give her soul to him.

But Addie persists and learns to live with her condition, until 2014 when she meets Henry, who miraculously can remember her after she leaves. She can't understand why this is (though I found it kind of predictable), but goes with it and begins a torrid love affair.

I found the book's short chapters and constant time jumps between past and present very effective, and enjoyed reading to find out what would happen. The ending was reasonably satisfying but I thought it dragged a bit and could have been a bit less drawn out. Fun read though, recommended. ( )

Stuck the ending, which is rare for books to do. I enjoyed Henry and the modern parts of the story more than the historical bits, which surprised me. Beautiful language and storytelling- but felt long, and sometimes I felt like I had to slough through exposition to get to the gems. Still enjoyable overall! ( )

The old gods may be great, but they are neither kind nor merciful. They are fickle, unsteady as moonlight on water, or shadows in a storm. If you insist on calling them, take heed: be careful what you ask for, be willing to pay the price. And no matter how desperate or dire, never pray to the gods that answer after dark.
