I really wanted to like this one, but I just was not impressed. The characters were consistently foolish and in their own way, and I ended up just looking forward to it ending. I've liked a couple other books by this author, but this series has been lacking for me so far. Still, I already have the third book checked out, so I'm not giving up on it breaking the trend. I didn't make it through this book, irritating characters, plot speeding along full steam, one place to another, with very few meaningful descriptions or details, it was just all over the map. The leading man ran hot & cold, thinking one thing in his head but behaving in the opposite way. His complete lack of communication skills were setting off big old red flags flying left and right for me. The supposedly adventurous heroine managed to disguise herself as a man well enough to escape her restrictive social upbringing and fool a ship full of men to cross an ocean, but when she's found out she suddenly can't come up with an escape plan, immediately rolls over and agrees to go right back, where she continually beats her head against the brick wall that is her uncommunicative husband. There's also a dubious character introduced as they return to England who is supposed to be staying with them, but who inexplicably seems to disappear from the pages and plot while the leads try to sort out their simultaneous attraction and dislike of one another. Ugg! I just couldn't. Do not recommend. “Rules for Heiresses” is a childhood friends-to-enemies-to-lovers historical romance that centers around a rebellious, opinionated spitfire of an heiress and a shunned or more-so once thought dead duke who meet in the most unlikely circumstances and are forced to marry after being caught in an a compromising situation. Cue in the wishy-washy should they, shouldn’t they act on their desires while struggling with their inner turmoil about why the relationship wouldn’t work plot. The back and forth, particularly in Lord Courtland case, was repetitive and the storyline itself drawn out in some parts but overall, this was a fairly decent novel. I enjoyed the banter, pining, and sizzling chemistry between the leads, and despite the heroine being a ‘virgin bride’, she was far from shy in embracing her desires. And shockingly enough, had a backbone. Hooray! All in all, an impressive read and I look forward to reading more from this author in the future. Rules for Heiresses by Amalie Howard Historical romance. Subsequent to The Princess Stakes but not labeled as a series. Can be read as a stand-alone but I think better if you’ve read the prior. Touches on mixed race parentage. Ravenna and Courtland were childhood friends until he was sent away by his stepmother. They meet again and are caught in an compromising position and are forced to return home. He must take on the title of Duke even though his family previously declared him dead and his stepbrother holds himself out as the Duke. A fun pairing. Ravenna is wild and unconventional, and Courtland is contrary and uncommon. They play off each other well and their attraction to each other includes plenty of steamy encounters. Corruption and lies must be untangled which adds depth and intrigue to storyline. I liked Ravenna’s strength of character and willingness to jump into any situation. The epilogue was fantastic in wrapping up all the loose end and character questions. I received a copy of this from NetGalley. I purchased a paperback copy to gift. ingen anmeldelser | tilføj en anmeldelse

Like any other Amalie H book, I enjoyed the characters. My favorite without question was Ravenna. I loved her spirit of adventure and her take charge view on her life. Courtland was okay but he drove me nuts in the middle and near the end although he ultimately redeemed himself.
This book is high on the shenanigans and family estrangement but I didn't mind it. It was fun seeing Sarani and Rhy again! Also I liked the resolution of one of Cordy's siblings.
A very solid 3.5 stars.
Thanks so much to the publishers and NetGalley for the ARC. ( )
