Daniel H. Pink, the #1 bestselling author of Drive and To Sell Is Human, unlocks the scientific secrets to good timing to help you flourish at work, at school, and at home.

Everyone knows that timing is everything. But we don't know much about timing itself. Our lives are a never-ending stream of "when" decisions: when to start a business, schedule a class, get serious about a person. Yet we make those decisions based on intuition and guesswork.

Timing, it's often assumed, is an art. In When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing, Pink shows that timing is really a science.

Drawing on a rich trove of research from psychology, biology, and economics, Pink reveals how best to live, work, and succeed. How can we use the hidden patterns of the day to build the ideal schedule? Why do certain breaks dramatically improve student test scores? How can we turn a stumbling beginning into a fresh start? Why should we avoid going to the hospital in the afternoon? Why is singing in time with other people as good for you as exercise? And what is the ideal time to quit a job, switch careers, or get married?

In When, Pink distills cutting-edge research and data on timing and synthesizes them into a fascinating, readable narrative packed with irresistible stories and practical takeaways that give readers compelling insights into how we can live richer, more engaged liv

Overall an interesting text which has lots of problems:
- references to scientific results often not detailed or precise
- many journalistic narrative mechanisms are tedious and feel artificial
- a self help undertone to many of the results tints the content’s authenticity

But overall many interesting facts, and worth the read. ( )

I really enjoyed this book! In addition to the wonderful storytelling component and the multitude of examples and case studies used to illustrate salient points, I particularly appreciated the "Time Hacker's Handbook" sections at the end of each chapter. These contain practical, immediately applicable tips and suggestions for improving our lives based on the science of timing.

I'd recommend WHEN to anyone wanting to learn more about the science of timing and true productivity. The book is incredibly well researched, written in a vivid and engaging style, and enormously practical. It's a well thought out, well-executed gem--and a wonderful addition to any productivity fanatic's bookshelf. ( )

Daniel Pink examines the science of timing. He argues that when a decision is made is an important factor that many people overlook. The subject matter includes such topics as circadian rhythms, time of year, beginnings, endings, motivation, restorative breaks, and group behavior. Pink cites scientific studies in general terms but does not provide the details. This may be a negative for those looking for specific proofs, but the positive is that it is easy to digest. Pink offers links to additional information available from his website. Though much of what is discussed is common sense, it does contain information that I found worthwhile, especially the tips to use in structuring the day’s activities. ( )

It's great to read a book that lays out and supports some of the ideas that you have.

People are grouped into the morning or night person buckets. I consider my left brain more morning and my right brain more of a night person. In both case, I'm not an afternoon person between 2-4 pm when both sides of my brain want to shut down. Daniel Pink suggests hourly monitoring to find your energy cycle ... I figured this out years ago and now I have a supporting author.

And the ending things on a sweet note .... internally known as my "wicked" vacation idea ... we try to schedule something near the end of the vacation to look forward to ... to tie things together. Just by luck, I happened to only find tickets for Wicked on the West End of the last night of my vacation, and that finished up the vacation wonderfully. It's been the blueprint for vacations ever since.

Also, I liked his ending idea as well about being in rhythm. While I'm not a rower ... I do get bent out of shape when the timing is off. So many frustrations come from me wanting to go / stop and the other parties is thinking/doing the opposite. Things just like getting out the door, eating (choosing to eat), or just communicating via email/text can be frustrating when involving other people.

I started this book skeptical that there was much new that would be worthy of the hype. I was proved wrong. However I don't think that this would be easy to implement in a business setting. In my life, though, I can see myself using this information. ( )
