It was hard to decide whether to like this book as it can come across as either intricately plotted or contrived (or very 'drama' as some of us would call it). Ended up giving a 4-star because the story was engaging, and it made you want to read on hoping for a good ending for all three siblings. Interesting and engaging storyline, but too plodding for my taste. Enjoyed the cultural aspects of "the islands," and the indomitable spirit of Covey. Breathes there an author with pen so bold, who ever to ourselves has told, a tale from one point of view, and told in but one time, not two? (Or more.) If you know of one, please enlighten me! It’s certainly not this author, who has penned an interesting story whose interest gets lost in the telling. Covering multi-generations, told by several characters, and vacillating back and forth from various time periods, it’s hard for readers, especially for audio readers, to keep track of the (way too) many characters and how they are related and/or connected to each other. Keeping track of who knows what secret, and why, is also needed but sometimes difficult to do. Be aware that characters change names, or go by nicknames, and one even goes further than that. The author also seems to have a checklist of social ills she wanted to include in her story. The end result is a disjointed story with very short chapters that jumps all over the place. It would be a much better book with some judicious editing, fewer extraneous characters, and a more continuous timeline, or even two. What could have been a powerful story was lost in the mishmash of side stories and unneeded characters. Still, it gets three stars for a good idea that missed the bullseye. This novel might be wonderful; I don't know. But I got thru page 66 and was 85% bored with it, and 100% uninterested in its characters; and bid it adieu. ingen anmeldelser | tilføj en anmeldelse

"In this moving debut novel, two estranged siblings must set aside their differences to deal with their mother's death and her hidden past--a journey of discovery that takes them from the Caribbean to London to California and ends with her famous black cake. In present-day California, Eleanor Bennett's death leaves behind a puzzling inheritance for her two children, Byron and Benny: a traditional Caribbean black cake, made from a family recipe with a long history, and a voice recording. In her message, Eleanor shares a tumultuous story about a headstrong young swimmer who escapes her island home under suspicion of murder. The heartbreaking journey Eleanor unfolds, the secrets she still holds back, and the mystery of a long-lost child, challenge everything the siblings thought they knew about their family, and themselves. Can Byron and Benny reclaim their once-close relationship, piece together Eleanor's true history, and fulfill her final request to 'share the black cake when the time is right?' Will their mother's revelations bring them back together or leave them feeling more lost than ever? Charmaine Wilkerson's debut novel is a story of how the inheritance of betrayals, secrets, memories, and even names, can shape relationships and history. Deeply evocative and beautifully written, Black Cake is an extraordinary journey through the life of a family changed forever by the choices of its matriarch"-- No library descriptions found. |

Charmaine Wilkerson - Black Cake: Besides the obvious (now I want to learn how to make black cake), this is both obviously a first novel and compelling in equal measure. #cursorybookreviews #cursoryreviews (
