Diana Wynne Jones was full of original ideas which has made her one of my favorite authors for years. The Homeward Bounders is an interesting concept, where the characters are forced to become pieces in a war game played by demons. I don't believe I have ever read another book with a similar plot. I did enjoy this book, however I don't feel it is as good as some of Diana Wynne Jones' other books. I read it several years ago and could not remember anything about it before reading it this time. It did not make any lasting impression on me, though I can see myself reading it again several years from now. ( )

This is such a clever and charming book. Would that I had the imagination of Diana Wynne Jones. ( )

DWJ Book Toast, #11

Diana Wynne Jones is one of my favorite fantasy authors, growing up and now, and I was saddened by the news of her death. I can't say I'm overcome with emotion - as personal as some of her work is to me, its not like I knew her after all - but I wish I could put into words how I feel about her no longer being out there, writing new adventures and laughing at all of us serious fans thinking so hard about her words when we should simply get on with the business of enjoying them.

And that's...what I'm going to do. She's left behind a huge body of work, a large amount of which I haven't read yet, so I'm going to reread all my old favorites (and hopefully some new).

Wow, this one, this one took me by surprise. This is very little like anything else that I've read in Diana Wynne Jones' work. Even by her standards it takes a hard edge to what people expect from a story written for children, especially genre work. It also succeeds in making role-playing games sinister. Maybe all of those concerned mothers groups and religious book-burners had the right idea...naaaaah.

But isn't that...what They want me to think? *Thunder* *Lightning* *Tubular Bells*

The book started off as rather unremarkable, but, once I got taken in, it was a sprint to finish it, and there were troubling hints throughout about what was going on. I'm not talking about Them either, They're only surface creepy. Jones crafts something much better than that. Its all in the ending. 'The Homeward Bounders' lacks the whimsy of her more popular works, but that makes the core of her writing all the more apparent, which is what really draws people in anyway, and what will keep her books in print. This is a book that I very much loved as a kid, and rereading as an adult, I still find the plot (and the twists), the shout-outs to mythology, and the twisty nature of reality as presented in this story to be completely gripping. The characters were a little less interesting than I remember, but there is certainly an identifiable amount of diversity, which is somewhat atypical of a kids book of the time. The plot is detailed, the world-building spectacular (as one would expect from Jones), and the writing romps along at a great rate. ( )

D&D, mythology, and the idea of parallel universes mix nicely in this YA adventure. It's a first-person account of a teenager who discovers that the world is a game, people are like pawns, and the players have been manipulating them for their own enjoyment for thousands of years. They especially like to play war. When Jamie is ejected from the game as a random element, he must wander the worlds in hope of finding his way back Home. ( )
