First off, this is not the 1930's "The Shadow". It even states that on the back cover. It is, however, an excellent "reboot" of it and, it's great! Definitely a page turner! It is well written, has shorter chapters and was left wide open for a sequel! This is not your usual James Patterson novel - but well worth your time. Highly recommend! ( )

I used to listen to The Shadow radio show when the Big Broadcast aired reruns on Sunday nights. I always enjoyed it, so I was eager to read this novel based on the character. This novel imagines Lamont Cranston and Margo Lane in the 1930s, who are poisoned and then frozen to enable them to come to life 150 years later. Awakening in a futuristic world, they find their archenemy, Khan, has reinvented himself as World President. With the help of a teenager, Maddy Gomes, they set out to destroy Kahn and his evil followers.
To me, this reads like a comic book story. I enjoyed it, but I wanted more. ( )

Much to Maddy Gomes' surprise the Shadow is real and he is Lamont Cranston. But, according to Cranston, the gun-wielding, mind-clouding hero on the radio and in comic books is a fabrication. The real Shadow is different as she soon discovers. This is an imaginative re-telling of the classic hero story. Cranston and Lang have been cryogenically suspended and awaken 150 years in the future only to discover that the Shadow's old nemesis, Shiwan Khan, is the World President. And the Shadow is the only one who can stop him. But can he? Cranston and Margo Lane must face their old nemesis, but they will find they need help, both to navigate the landscape of this future world, and to defeat Khan. This is a pretty good story with good characters, and while I enjoyed the book - Patterson is a great storyteller - I confess I prefer the gun-wielding, mind-clouding Shadow. ( )

Lamont Cranston, vigilante of justice, has a secret identity known only by Margo Lane and Shiwan Khan. Margo is his forever love; Khan, his megalomaniacal enemy. An unexpected ambush threatens Margo and Lamont; with his last breath, Lamont, carrying Margo, reaches safety . . . he hopes.

Some one hundred and fifty years later, Lamont awakens. The world is strikingly different and yet much the same. Meeting a teenager, the mysterious Maddy Gomes, Lamont discovers that cruel Khan reigns in power as the World President. Can Lamont stop the evil Khan?

Only the Shadow knows.

Step back in time to the days of radio’s adventure serials with the Shadow. Maintaining the appeal of the radio serials with non-stop action, a massive threat, and several VERY close calls, the narrative grabs readers at the outset and pulls them along as the Shadow evolves yet again, much as the character has done in his journey from radio to pulp fiction to comic strips, to the many, many novels, spoken word albums, films, and video games.

Despite minimal information regarding the state of the world [or even of New York City] beyond the squalor and the schism between rich and everyone else, the story works in the way that all of the earlier adventures worked. Lamont and Margo, with an able assist by likable teenager Maddy, manage quite well in this dystopian twenty-first century tale.

There’s family, there’s danger, there’s humor . . . “The Shadow” is an entertaining tale that promises to take its readers back to the heyday of the radio serial.

Highly recommended. ( )
