Fitz Chivalry confronts his destiny as the catalyst who holds the fate of the kingdom of the Six Duchies ... and the world itself. King Shrewd is dead at the hands of his son Regal. As is Fitz--or so his enemies and friends believe. But with the help of his allies and his beast magic, he emerges from the grave, deeply scarred in body and soul. The kingdom also teeters toward ruin: Regal has plundered and abandoned the capital, while the rightful heir, Prince Verity, is lost to his mad quest--perhaps to death. Only Verity's return--or the heir his princess carries--can save the Six Duchies. But Fitz will not wait. Driven by loss and bitter memories, he undertakes a quest: to kill Regal. I loved this trilogy and, as with all good books, I didn’t want this to end. It’s rare to find a book where you care about so many characters, but most were so richly drawn, it wasn’t difficult to fall in love them. There’s a tendency for fantasy to lack depth but not here. The books explore the meaning of sacrifice, love, and maturity. I’ll definitely be seeking more books by Robin Hobb. ( )

copy-pasted from my Librarything account: 838 pages is not as easy to read through as e.g. some Dragonlance books. Anyway, things get more exciting here and at several occasions it's hard to put the book down. Fitz gets into several adventures, fails on many occasions, and so on. But on a whole the book is also tedious/long-winded. You want to advance, but then Hobb goes into one of the many descriptional trances, so to speak. Describing what Fitz or anyone else does, says, how the environment looks, and so on. But maybe that's also one of the positive aspects, so you can easily imagine what's going on and put yourself in the story, as a spectator.

Another downside, next to the gazillion descriptions: Fitz behaving like a spoiled child, even if he's not 12 anymore. It gets on my nerves. ( )

Wow, wow, wow. I just finished reading Royal Assassin and Assassin's Quest back to back and it was a thrilling roller roaster ride. In this third book in the trilogy, Fitz gets up to his usual stuff; trouble. He gets into it, and a lot.
Robin Hobb has a way with words, and an uncanny way of grabbing hold of loose ends scattered around all three books and tidy them up nicely. This was a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy. There are a few unanswered questions, though. And I hope to find some answers in one of the other trilogies set in this world. Oh, and speaking of the world.. Now that I've gotten very accustomed to this world, one that Hobb has built very meticulously, I'm not quite ready to leave. So for me, it's off to Bingtown, and the Liveship Traders.
Oh, and ferrets are awesome. ( )

Robin Hobb's world is vivid and interesting. I like her characters also. She reminds me of Robert Jordan, if he knew how to develop his characters better. But it's that sort of anthropological fantasy - lots of travels and different worlds.

I was happy to find that most of the mysteries laid out in the first and second books were finally answered: why are the Redship Raiders attacking, what are Elderlings, where is Verity. Not all of the plot lines end the way I wanted but I don't feel like I was left hanging.

What would I change? Speed up the pace. Modernize the dialogue. Both those issues made it a slow read. But I'm glad I pushed through the whole trilogy. ( )

I am very much enjoying these books. They're well written. The characters are endearing and the settings are challenging. Everything is well planned and well drawn. Oddly, I started out the year reading the Rain Wilds trilogy of this series. I read them first, and they fall in the middle of the chronology. I wasn't confused while I read them, but I am a bit confused about the dragons and Elderlings now. I have to assume that it will clear up during the latter parts of the series. Other than that, this is an awesome high fantasy books/series. ( )
