From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Catherine Bybee comes the steamy first novel in her new adrenaline-fueled Richter series. As an employee of MacBain Security and Solutions, Claire Kelly can certainly hold her own. Armed with an impressive set of covert skills, she's more than prepared to tackle any job that comes her way...except one involving Cooper Lockman. Cooper and Claire used to work together before his feelings for her sent him packing to Europe for six long years. But now he's back and determined to ignore the still-smoldering heat that lingers between them. Their current mission: go undercover together at a California high school to root out the mastermind behind a prostitution ring targeting young girls. The closer they get to the truth and the closer they get to each other, however, the deadlier their task becomes. As Claire and Cooper risk their lives to bring down their target, will their hearts be the final casualties?… (mere)

Claire Kelly is assigned to go undercover as a high school student to help track down a human trafficking ring preying on young girls. Along with her will be her friend, Cooper Lockman, who has just returned from 6 years setting up a second branch of MacBain Security and Solutions in England. Now that he is back, Cooper is determined to make his friendship with Claire into something more, while they are working together on this assignment. However, their relationship may have to wait because not only are they looking for criminals at the school, but they will also be searching for crooked undercover cops.

On paper, Changing the Rules sounds like an exciting romantic suspense novel, but whatever romance this story contains is weak on emotions and substance. The mystery element of the book moves too slowly to be called suspense until the last couple of chapters, leaving this story feeling like it is missing its core. Overall, Changing the Rules is a disappointment on all levels. ( )

⭐Absolute, adrenaline filled F U N☀!!!

The first in an action/suspense filled series, and our author knocked it out of the park!!! What a fun read!! Many twists and turns, fun banter, all.cloaked.in finding/stopping a horrific trafficking ring within high schools. Our main characters.are.determined not to let anyone else fall victim! The ultimate game of cat and mouse with very high stakes!! I loved the family atmosphere within the team. Wonderful world building and character development will.draw you in fast!! I can't wait to see what's up next in this series.

If you can't get enough of these characters, and this was your first time reading anything by the author...check out FIANCE BY FRIDAY for Neil and Gwen's origin story, and Sasha previously appears in SAY IT AGAIN (FIRST WIVES #5) where it looks like the operation that brought Claire and Jax into the team. Changing the Rules by Catherine Bybee
Richter #1

Entertaining romance with a bit of suspense, human traffickers to find, youth to save, bad guys to unearth, friends and teammates to work with, and a healthy dose of chemistry with the opportunity for more. I had a feeling these characters had met in a previous book or series and that part of their backstories would have provided this book with more depth but it also was able to stand on its own.

What I liked:
* McBain Security and Solutions: business that the team works for, offices in the USA and Europe, couples seem to have met their significant other(s) on assignments in that previous book/series I mentioned above.
* Claire Kelly: works for Neil McBain in the security business, highly trained operative, attended The Richter School, met and worked with Cooper several years ago…before he left for Europe, good friend, capable, multilingual, interesting.
* Cooper Lockman: works for Neil McBain in the security business, highly trained operative, ex-military, liked Claire more than he felt he should have due to age gap six years before, team player, capable.
* Watching the relationship between Claire and Cooper develop
* The secondary characters and friends that worked together
* The purpose of the team’s mission in this book – always like to see human traffickers and other bad guys removed from the equation.
* Not knowing for sure who all the evil guys were and how they would be located
* Meeting a new-to-me author
* That it seemed it would be a great story for NA/YA readers

What I didn’t like:
* The bad guys I was meant not to like
* Knowing that human trafficking is all too real
* Having the feeling there was more to the characters I would have benefited from knowing if I had read a previous book.
* More a dislike than hate was that it felt slow paced for the first half and the action didn’t really start till later in the book.

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more by this author? I think so

Thank you to NetGalley and Montlake for the ARC – This is my honest review.

This book is the first in a new series. Claire Kelly works for McBain Security and Solutions. She is twenty-four and eager for more action. I liked learning about her backstory as an orphan from a boarding school for assassins.

When the firm takes a case about sex trafficking in local public and private high schools, Claire and her best friend and fellow agent Jax are chosen to go undercover as high school students. Cooper is chosen to go undercover as a substitute auto mechanics teacher and track coach.

Cooper is just back from Europe. He left six years earlier because he felt he was too old to be romantically interested in Claire. Also, his boss Neil McBain who thinks of himself as a father figure for Claire encouraged the move. They both felt Claire needed some time to finish growing up. Claire didn't agree. She was disappointed that her friend Cooper was suddenly gone.

The case immediately got complicated since there were undercover cops on the scene too who were unknown to McBain and who might be dirty cops. Claire quickly found her way into the crowds she needed to infiltrate and befriended young girls who were potential victims of the scam. She also developed her persona as a smart-mouthed rebel with a talent for track. There are lots of suspicious characters in this one. There are a variety of teachers who might or might not have parts in the sex trafficking. There are students and former students who also behave is suspicious manners.

Cooper and Claire get closer as they work to investigate this trafficking case and as they overcome their miscommunications. There was a lot of tension because they needed to keep their relationship secret or ruin their covers as student and teacher.

I enjoyed the story even though it began by introducing quite a large number of characters who will presumably have larger roles in future books in this seriesbut who made me want to make a list of each one in order to keep track of them. I also had the feeling that some of the characters had fuller stories told in other books by the author which was confirmed by the author's afterward. I enjoyed the story more once the book began to focus on the characters who had large roles in this story. ( )
