This is my first time reading something by George Bernard Shaw. I had heard about him of course, but never actually read any of his work. A funny play about two men in love with the same woman. It ends with Candida explaining her insights on both men. ( )

Il marito James Morell, un pastore anglicano, oratore apprezzato, socialista, uomo perbene, le chiede di scegliere con chi stare. Candida dice che sceglierà il più debole: dunque il marito perché Eugene, in quanto poeta, conosce e convive già con l'infelicità.
E' una commedia in tre atti, scritta nel 1895, rappresentata nel 1897 e pubblicata nel 1898 nelle Commedie gradevoli e sgradevoli. Candida è una donna giovane e bella che si trova a dover scegliere tra il marito e il pastore. Candida sceglierà il più debole: il marito che non si darebbe pace del suo abbandono, mentre il poeta si, perché conosce l'infelicità. ( )

Humorous & entertaining. I needed to read a play as part of my summer reading challenge. To my surprise, I read this from start to finish in one sitting. What a pleasant way to kick off summer. ( )

A wonderful play about love and need. Candida is one of the strongest female characters I've ever read -- intelligent, intuitive and master of her own destiny, answerable to no one. ( )

I'll start with the caveat that I'm a novice when it comes to plays, but that said, this was a thoroughly captivating work that I was able to finish in about 2 hours. It was light but dealt with weighty themes (love, relationships, sexism, etc.). The psychological insights were poignant, if not entirely subtle. I read this only with an idea of getting a better grasp on Shaw, but admittedly was not very enticed by the description of the play. After all of that I was very pleasantly surprised by the experience. For the reading mood I've been in lately, this was the perfect blend of lightness and heft. ( )
