Jane Wunderly and her aunt have settled in England on this stage of their travels. She and Aunt Millie are welcome to stay on the estate of Millie's former paramour (and father of their child, Lillian), while Millie gets to know Lillian a bit. Lord Hughes made pretty good money during WWI, and is able to hire veterans to help run his estate/golf course while his daughter Lillian practices for amateur golf championships. When one of the veterans dies at the wheel of Lord Hughes car under suspicious circumstances, the return of Inspector Redvers isn't far behind. Very much like a classic Christie novel, the estate is populated with family, servants and plenty of secrets. It was a great follow up to the first book. ( )

This is another light, fun read from Erica Ruth Neubauer. The mystery is filled with misdirection, and I loved the fact that Jane was learning to fly, which reminded me of several events and people from that time period. The only thing that slightly bothered me was Jane's romantic waffling about Mr. Redvers. The reason why her indecision didn't make me roll my eyes was that, with the experiences she had in her own marriage (she's a widow), she would be extremely hesitant to put herself in another relationship.

If you love reading light, fun country house mysteries set in the 1920s when women were beginning to enjoy more independent lives, Murder at Wedgefield Manor should certainly be your perfect cup of tea.

If you haven't read the first in series, you still won't have any trouble filling in the blanks (but you'll want to read it anyway!). It's 1926 in an English country house with a collection of friends, relatives, displaced war veterans, and a flight instructor. The interesting man from the foreign office turns up again just in time to help Jane and the too helpful police inspector with the murder investigation and other mysteries. The humor is understated, the characters vivid, the plot complex, and the whole thing entertaining! The publisher's blurb is a good hook so there's no need to repeat that. Loved it!
I requested and received a free temporary ebook copy from Kensington Books via NetGalley. Thank you! ( )
