Another really cute story - this time about a likable, quirky character named Gooney Bird. The book is really about storytelling and I loved the way Lowry jumps between the plot and Gooney Bird's "absolutely true" tales. There's some fun wordplay for the word nerds too.

Course evaluation:

Personal Response: This was a fun way to teach storytelling. Gooney Bird is a charming character and I greatly enjoyed the wordplay involved in her stories.

Evaluation: Lowry’s use of dialogue has a realistic flow and will feel authentic to readers; the students interrupt each other, veer off topic easily, and reflect the typical speech patterns of young children. As a result, Lowry’s characterization is strong even though there isn’t much growth or change; the story takes place over one week, yet each student has unique traits and is recognizable by the end. The changes in text font and size also clearly mark Gooney Bird’s stories from the plot, which remove any confusion for younger readers. Thomas’ few drawings show all of the Gooney Bird’s outfits, an excellent addition to the book; the illustrations allow the reader to really appreciate Gooney Bird’s style and set the tone for her individualism. it is about a girl, Gooney Bird Greene with the most extravagant stories, and the most extravagant outfits to go with the stories as she tells them. None of her stories are false, they are all true, but they do stretch the imagination.

A delightful story of a precocious second grade girl who takes her class by storm. The students are enthralled with her clothing styles, her unusual lunches, and her fantastic, absolutely true stories. As her classmates and teacher are captivated by Gooney's stories, they also learn a few things about what makes a good story and how everyone has their own special stories to tell. ( )

A young girl who goes by Gooney Bird Greene is a new student going into a new class from China. She wears different clothes then other students and wanted to sit in the middle so she could be in the middle of everything. When one student needs to go to the nurses office the class decided they wanted to learn a story about the new girl. Gooney Bird liked this because she wanted to be the center of attention and so she went up and decided to tell a story about how she got her name. She goes on to tell that story and many others about her life. The stories seem crazy at first, like she talked about how she was in jail, but she was talking about playing monopoly. Throughout the book she uses her imagination to cleverly tell true stories about her life. ( )
