Lily Brown uses her art to paint the world as she sees it. She sees the beauty and wonder in everyday objects. Throughout her painting you can see the variety in shapes and styles that she uses. She also enjoys describing her work with color and emotions. Lily uses painting to describe the magic that she sees in the world. However, Lily feels the "magic" most of all when she is with her family and holding her little brother.
I think this is a fabulous book to read to an art class. The book mentions colors, shapes, and paint as a medium. You can also see where the illustrator switches styles to depict the "real" world and Lily's drawings. The illustrations in the book are beautiful and very fitting. I think it would be a fun project for a class to try to recreate Lily's watercolor style. ( )

When Lily Brown paints, her world starts to change; trees wear hats and drink tea, people walk upside down, and apples sing all the way home from the store. It's Lily Brown's world, and it's wondrous.

Lily's paintings seem like a transformation out of her reality. This sense of creativity is very apparent in the illustrations as we can feel her emotions and go to the world's that are created with her. The colors and actions within her painting can be made believe from her imagination such as the people walking upside down. When she puts her paints away it changes her perspective on life and her family and all is "wondrous". ( )

This was a nice book that captures the aspects of how kids see the world. As we know the kids do not see the world the way we adults do. Kids then to put their own twist on the world which is a good thing. In this book the young girl Lily Brown shows us the way the world look from her eyes. I would read this book so that my students know its ok to let your imaginations run wild. They can do it through painting like Lilly Brown or in some other way. I really enjoyed the book overall and would love to read it to my students. ( )

This book resonated with me as an art lover. I remember trying to recreate Van Gogh’s Starry Night in elementary school and it was lovely to read this book and follow Lily through her imagination.
Kindergarten-third grade curricular connections may be formed in art appreciation and writing skills. Introduce students to the masters by exposing them first to a child’s renderings, and then present the artists’ works. Discuss the painters’ styles and have the students write their impressions of the artists, the paintings, and create their own masterpiece in a similar style of one of the artists.
