"A visionary novel about the collision of technology and play, horror and humanity, from a master of the spine-tingling tale. They've infiltrated homes in Hong Kong, shops in Vancouver, the streets of Senegal, town squares of Oaxaca, schools in Tel Aviv, bedrooms in Ohio. They're following you. They're everywhere now. They're us. In Samanta Schweblin's wildly imaginative new novel, Little Eyes, "kentukis" have gone viral across the globe. They're little mechanical stuffed animals that have cameras for eyes, wheels for feet, and are connected to an anonymous global server. Owners of kentukis have the eyes of a stranger in their home and a cute squeaking pet following them; or you can be the kentuki and voyeuristically spend time in someone else's life, controlling the creature with a few keystrokes. Through kentukis, a jaded Croatian hustler stumbles into a massive criminal enterprise and saves a life in Brazil, a lonely old woman in Peru becomes fascinated with a young woman and her louche lover in Germany, and a kid with no mother in Antigua finds a new virtual family and experiences snow for the first time in Norway. These creatures can reveal the beauty of connection between farflung souls - but they also expose the ugly humanity of our increasingly linked world. Trusting strangers can lead to unexpected love and marvelous adventure, but what happens when the kentukis pave the way for unimaginable terror?"--… (mere)

Let's expand our horizons, said I and my book club friends. Let's read some Spanish/Latin American sci-fi. It's going to be fun, we said. Phew.
Am I glad that I decided to read this in Russian translation, or what? The reason being: I am a fast reader, and in Russian I am EXTRA FAST. So I did not have to suffer long - Friday evening Saturday morning, and I was DONE.
The idea of kentukis is interesting enough - the making of this idea into a book, however, is not successful.
- I was not impressed by the writing.
- There isn't a single character to care about, they are all there to illustrate an idea, so none of them are "alive".
- Misanthropy is EASY. You just need to go to your nearest news site for inspiration. What is less easy is finding nuances, moral grey zones, and writing about people who are complex. Not that I mind reading books with really bad and really good guys in them - but these are of a different kind than this one is trying to be. Misanthropy is LAZY THINKING.
- It's annoying when books are trying so hard to be LITERATURE. Maybe it was for the benefit of readers who need to wash their hands if they happen to touch a sci-fi book?
- At least I am looking forward to our book club discussion.

And now I'll go read something that will help me get this so-called novel out of my brain.

it's not ALL as disturbing as the first chapter. some of it is sweet.

I definitely got caught up in everyone's drama, which says a lot for how well written it is. ( )

The conceit got old. I read about half before I decided that I really didn’t care about dumb people buying computer pets that other people “inhabited”. Not that interesting. DNF
