It Was You be Raed Slewa is a fiction based on real life events and people.

I was really fascinated by the stories of Adam. It gives a picture of life in Iraq during to 1990s from the prospective of a young children as he grows.

The ending was a twist that I didn’t see coming and you feel his heart break all overall again.

This definitely an interesting quick read that I would suggest if you want to read about lives of citizens in different countries. ( )

Adam's life in Iraq is hard but they survive because they love and support each other. They end up emigrating to survive. ( )

A beautifully nuanced book on the life of an Iraqi Christian family living in Baghdad from the time of the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait through to 9//11. The tale is told in the form of a series of letters, chapters in a book that Adam writes after his friend Jon, phoning him as Adam is trying to commit suicide, begs him to write so that Adam and Jon can both understand why Adam wants to kill himself. The first and last chapter are set in present day USA, between these pages are the chapters setting out the life of Adam, his family and friends from when Adam is 5 - the Iraq-Kuwait War, through to 18, when Adam and most of his family have fled Iraq.

I have Iraqi friends - who lived through this time, they are both Christian and Muslim, it has taken me years to talk with them and learn some of the horrors they experienced in Baghdad, and other cities which became household names during the long war with ISIS. The book rings so true, that even though the ending was a surprise, it wasn't a surprise. The people who have left Iraq are broken. The people who live in Iraq are broken. UN Sanctions caused starvation to millions, Bombs killed hundreds of thousands, but oil - which is not mentioned here - killed even more,

To Raed, or perhaps your given name is Slewa, I admire you for putting this to paper/kindle. I am an editor, I find there is a consistent trend for the final third of self published books to stumble on the editing path, as though readers, editors and the author themselves are skipping through the pages. If you want me to correct the errors, I am happy to do so. No book as good as this deserves to have minor flaws in the editing. ( )

I am glad I received this book from this author. I totally loved it, since the beginning. To be honest I wasn't expecting it to be this good. It kept me hooked until the end. It's such an interesting read. I love how the story evolves after every page you read. ( )

A truly beautiful story, with complexity. Beautifully written. Everyone should read. I would compare it to the Kite Runner. ( )
