Six months after the events of In the Woods, Detective Cassie Maddox is still trying to recover. She's transferred out of the murder squad and started a relationship with Detective Sam O'Neill, but she's too badly shaken to make a commitment to him or to her career. Then Sam calls her to the scene of his new case: a young woman found stabbed to death in a small town outside Dublin. The dead girl's ID says her name is Lexie Madison--the identity Cassie used years ago as an undercover detective--and she looks exactly like Cassie--From publisher description.… (mere)

The Likeness af Tana French

  1. 180
Den hemmelige historie af Donna Tartt (tangentialine, cransell, GodOfTheAnthill, danibrecher, Booksloth)
tangentialine: Same sense of the mysterious, same sense of intense psychological speculation.
  2. 50
Tilbage til Faithful Place : spændingsroman af Tana French (ijustgetbored)
ijustgetbored: This book picks up Frank Mackey's story from where it left off in The Likeness.
  3. 30
Judas Child af Carol O'Connell (VictoriaPL)
  4. 41
Den lille ven af Donna Tartt (rbtanger)
rbtanger: The similarities between these two books are numerous, in spite of the fact that one takes place in Ireland in the 1980s and one in the 1970s American South. If you enjoyed one, I think it highly probable you will enjoy the other.
  5. 20
Bone by Bone af Carol O'Connell (amyblue)
  6. 10
Særlige emner inden for ulykkesteori : roman af Marisha Pessl (samalots)

  7. 10
The Distant Echo af Val McDermid (amyblue)
  8. 10
Skæbnesommer af Barbara Vine (Bookmarque, Ling.Lass)
Bookmarque: Similar in that it features murder and a group of young adults living together in an inherited estate in what they think is an idyll.
Ling.Lass: Reconstructing what led to a murder among an eclectic and tight-knit group of housemates.
  9. 10
A Darker Domain: A Novel af Val McDermid (kraaivrouw)
  10. 00
The Strange Death of Fiona Griffiths af Harry Bingham (wandering_star)

Second in the Dublin Murder Squad series. Well-written mystery with a detective named Cassie Maddox as the main protagonist. I think that reading the Dublin Murder Squad series in order provides a great psychological background for each subsequent book. (Cassie plays an important part in the first novel of the series, "In the Woods".) An interesting view of how bad decisions play out in a detective procedural.
Due to a group of closely-connected graduate college students at the core of this novel, it's reminiscent of Donna Tartt's 'Secret History' in many ways. ( )

I really enjoyed this book. Fresh, interesting premise with a main character and plot that keeps the reader's attention. Looking forward to reading more by this author. ( )

So, Tana French's second novel continues following the Dublin Murder Squad, although it seems her gimmick is each successive book follows a character introduced in the last one - The Likeness follows Rob's partner Cassie from the first book, and I see the third novel follows Frank Mackey, the guy-who-knows-a-guy undercover guru introduced in The Likeness - so if you were hoping for more quality time with Rob Ryan (I wasn't), you'll be disappointed.

I'll get the obvious comparison to Donna Tartt's Real Good eccentric-college-students-get-mixed-up-in-crime story The Secret History out of the way: this is kind of like that but as a police procedural. I don't think French is on the same level as Tartt (but then I don't think a lot of people are), but her crazily florid writing has sort of grown on me (although it sometimes seems like she has a dartboard covered in sticky notes that say things like "honey and seawater" or "oranges and pennies"). This is an interesting, taut mystery (my heart was racing throughout all of the third act) and you should maybe give it a try. ( )

Rubbish. So many words, so many hours spent reading those never ending unnecessary words only to be left with the vaguest of answers to mystery at the core of this novel. I wish I had the time back. ( )

If you can manage to suspend your disbelief sufficiently to accept the central premise of this book (and I did) then you get a psychologically rich, somewhat claustrophobic police procedural come who-dun-it with some side glances into the sociology of rich rural Dublin v rural small town Ireland. French moves the series on by moving a secondary character from the previous book into the main character role, cleverly providing a degree of continuity alongside a degree of novelty. Superior crime novel. Nov 2020 ( )

Although she overburdens the traditional police-procedural form with the weight of romance, psychological suspense, social history and mythic legend, she sets a vivid scene for her complex characters, who seem entirely capable of doing the unexpected.
