A really very lovely tale of the weird. Evidently there is much Lovecraft in this tale. I have only ever read At The Mountains of Madness and then tons of 'weird' fiction. Elizabeth Bear has told a weird tale of a scientist who discovers something hidden in her genes and a revelation of world she had not known about. What I had read as a portal story. As the narrator finds this other weird fantastical place she has one part of her self there and the other in our world. A traveller story and a portal story by way of adventuresqe travel log.
