When Gage Evans gets a look at his hot nurse, he's smitten immediately. Too bad he's given the nurse the impression he's some kind of daredevil. It couldn't be further from the truth. Gage is a college journalism instructor writing a series of guest columns that require him to jump into new experiences -- a fun bucket list, but one that does nothing to convince Ben he's not an adrenaline junkie. Fresh off his latest heartbreak, nurse Ben Griggs is wary when one of his patients shows an interest in him -- especially when that patient showed up in the ER after a motorcycle accident. Ben's ex was a biker, a friend with benefits, and he dropped Ben cold when someone more interesting came along. Ben isn't the kind of guy who can hold the interest of an adrenaline junkie like Gage Evans for long. The last thing he wants is to lose his heart to the wrong man again. The more Ben gets to know Gage, the harder he is to resist. He can only hold on for the ride and keep his guard up as much as he can. But Ben's lack of trust seriously gets in the way of building a relationship, and Gage will only be patient so long. Can he trust Gage enough to give his heart, or are they destined to have a fling that goes nowhere? This is a spin-off from the Ashe Sentinel Connections series, where Ben appears briefly in the book "Hard Press." It can be read as a standalone.… (mere)

Heart Trouble is the first book in the ‘Heart and Health’ series. The two MCs are Gage Evans, a college Journalism instructor, and Ben Griggs, a nurse. This story is told in third person from both characters’ povs.

The blurb does a good job of explaining the plot, but I’ll summarize it here. Gage ends up going to the emergency room after a motorcycle accident. There he meets Ben and makes a terrible attempt of asking for a date. Ben is super wary of adrenaline junkies so he turns down Gage’s request, and not very kindly. After another accident, Gage is at the hospital and now Ben is annoyed and he’s still not going to date Gage, but Gage is persistent. The story is about how Gage wears down Ben’s resistance, but both men have deep trust and commitment issues that need to be worked through.

The plot centers around Ben and Gage’s trust issues. The most obvious is Ben’s recent breakup with an adrenaline junkie, which is why he doesn’t trust Gage’s thirst for adventurous sports. What Ben doesn’t do, is stop and listen to why Gage is involved in the sports. He’s writing a series of guest columns that requires him to try new experiences. Ben jumps to conclusions and the two men get off to a bad start. The story pretty much is Gage chasing after Ben until Gage is confronted with his own issues and then they start to work on their problems together. The author did a great job creating distinctive characters with depth and then having those characters grow.

I enjoyed the author’s style of writing. It’s very precise without many extra flourishes. The changing points of view were marked with either chapter breaks or paragraph markers. However, I found that when the povs changed within a chapter and used paragraph breaks, that at least three times in the story the change was vague and could have been from either character’s pov. In fact, I’d be reading along thinking it was one character when I’d notice something off with either dialogue or monologue. By that point, I’d read a couple pages into the new scene and had to reread to figure out if I was reading Ben’s or Gage’s pov. That of course took me out of the story. I would say that the confusion with the pov’s was the main issue with this book.

I liked the plot and how the story played out, as well as the characters. I decided to go ahead and continue with the series and am now reading book two. I give Heart Trouble 4 Stars, taking off a star for the problem with the point of view changes.

Cute!

Found this standalone and sat down to read it. Characters were relatable and the situations pretty unique. Very cute read! ( )
