I almost stopped reading. Almost. The first couple chapters were quite boring, but, they were necessary. They provided a history for those who are not quite familiar with Greek Mythology or for those who know the big names like Minos and his Minotaur, but might not have heard of his daughters, or his wife. The story takes off from there. Betrayal, love, more betrayal. Loss. The common theme seems to be how the choices of man ripple and effect those they love, the women who are just supposed to go along with it all.
It does getting a little long in regards to Dionysus and I found myself wishing the stories lines would wrap up a little quicker, but overall, I loved this book. ( )

This was a great retelling of the story of the Minotaur, highlighting the key role of Ariadne in Thesus’s defeat of the Minotaur. It is warm and humanizing, reminding the reader that as horrific as the Minotaur was, he was still Ariadne’s brother, and her helping Theseus to defeat him was not a straightforward decision. Ariadne’s sister, Phaedra, gets a sizeable role too; the book could almost have been called Ariadne and Phaedra. The part that struck me the most about this was the scenes where the sisters establish in their own way how Theseus constructs his own story for the sake of his own reputation, illustrating how people become marginalized from history. I will consider this version of the myth to be the “real” one from now on. An excellent debut for Saint; I will happily read more retellings that she writes. ( )

This was my May 2021 Book of the Month selection. ( )

A solidly entertaining retelling of the Theseus myth from the point of view of Ariadne, who helped him defeat the Minotaur and betrayed her family in the process, and her sister Phaedra. Saint has a really nice bright visual sense, animating the scenes and people well, and centering Ariadne—a minor but pivotal character in the original myth—was a good choice. I don't think there's any point in comparing her to Madeline Miller just because they're both retellings from a woman's POV—there isn't the same absolute control of pacing and mood as Circe, but I don't think it's intended to be the same kind of book. Ariadne is very vivid, engaging recasting of a myth and didn't need to be anything more than that—I liked it a lot just the way it is. ( )

I LOVED Circe, so my expectations for this one were high. It's not bad and is certainly similar to Circe, but that was the problem. I kept comparing the two and this one just didn't hit the same deep notes for me. I do love that these Greek myths are being retold with women's voices. I recommend this if you're a fan of mythology, but temper your expectations if you are a fan of Madeline Miller's work. ( )
