Cosa significa «essere passato»?Cosa significa ricordare? E' possibile che il passato, attraverso la memoria, serva a costruire un futuro consapevole? Ricoeur ci propone una lunga riflessione che è innanzitutto revisione del nostro tenace legame con il passato, un cordone ombelicale che ci fa conservare rancori e sedimentazioni. Il passato tuttavia possiede l'anteriorità dell'essere, della cosa che al presente non esiste più e che noi evochiamo, sottoponendola ad alterazione, poiché nessun ricordo è oggettivo, inalterato. Noi piuttosto lo falsifichiamo. L'unico modo per scongiurare la falsificazione della memoria è guardare alla sua dimensione etica e farne "memoria giusta.
