1865 Events lead to a newspaper column being written by Lady Katherine Bascomb (owner of the The London Gazette) which results in an arrest in the case of the 'Commandments Killer'. Much to the annoyance of Inspector Andrew Eversham.
On realising that she needs help Lady Katherine, accepts an invitation to a house party at Thornfield Hall, Lewiston, Lake District, home of old friend Lord Valentine Thorn where she discovers a body, murdered. The inspector is sent to investigate.
Unfortunately I didn't take to Lady Katherine, but the story was entertaining enough, a well-written historical romance and mystery. Though I prefer little or no romance in my mysteries. A good start to the series, though interest in future books will depend how much Eversham will continue to be part of the series.
An ARC was provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

A Lady’s Guide to Mischief and Mayhem- Collins
Audio performance by Mary Jane Wells
3 stars

This is a lightweight, late 19th century mystery/romance. Lady Katherine Bascomb is a young widow who has conveniently inherited her late husband’s newspaper. She has been enjoying a widow’s freedom to run her own business, often writing on feminist topics. Detective Inspector Andrew Eversham is unhappy when her investigative reporting interferes with a murder investigation. It’s a predictable mystery with an instant romance. The characters are fun. The audio performance was entertaining. ( )

I am so excited about this new series by Manda Collins. She has always been a favorite author of mine. Historical romance mysteries are a favorite genre so I was excited to hear about this book. Delightful characters that we want more of and an exciting mystery make for a very enjoyable read. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a well written book that will let you go on an adventure in reading. ( )

Lady Katherine Bascomb seems more like a woman of the 21 century than a Victorian. She's extremely independent and runs her late husband's newspaper business which has her writing a a self-help column with her friend Caio that has them investigating a murder. They discover a witness overlooked by the police that calls attention to that fact and immediate arrest is made but of the wrong man. This introduces her to the lead detective who has been demoted and they set out to find the real murderer. ( )

I found the book interesting, the characters likable, the sex scene erotic, and I read it all the way through. I did however, figure out who done it.

London 1865 a killer using the 10 Commandants as clues is at large. The cop assigned to investigate missed the most important witness. When Lady Katherine (owner/editor/publisher of a London newspaper) & her friend, Lady Caroline, find & interview the overlooked witness and publish the witness's account of what she saw, all Hell Breaks Loose at Scotland Yard.

After the article causes a tremendous stir, DI Eversham who is in charge of the case is reassigned, an uncaring uncouth clod is given the assignment, and without investigation Scotland Yard arrests an innocent man.

When Lady Katherine & Lady Caroline leave London for their friend Valentine Thorne's estate, the murderer follows as does DI Eversham. ( )

Prologue: If Sir Horace did not desist from his asinine talk about what constituted appropriate conversation for a lady, she would do one of them an injury, thought Lady Katherine Bascomb, hiding her scowl behind her fan.
