Even though I read book one yesterday, I still think that this one could easily stand alone because it answers any background questions even as they arise. We're with Charlotte, her grandfather, and their distillery in rural nowheresville and it starts with a grand birthday celebration until the local banker unexpectedly drops dead while Charlotte is unknowingly getting an engagement ring from a former acquaintance. Say what? She was busy seeing a man die right before her while the Hollywood doofus is busy making tabloid news and totally missed his putting a ring with a large diamond on her finger. The next day she has a row with said doofus as she tries to return the ring and he gets nasty. The day after that, the sheriff needs a few words with her because the doofus has been blunt force traumaed to death. The next thing you know her childhood nemesis is unwillingly helping her investigate because he seems to be in the frame as well. Good fun and good sleuthing complete with red herrings and plot twists and some good laughs along the way. I loved it!
