"Lee Vance has written a body slam to the mat of a debut thriller. Each page is crammed with well-developed characters real enough to read out and hold. The plot builds to a pitch loud enough to shatter glass. And the dialogue is as true as any seen since the golden days of Frederick Forsyth. There's nothing better than a cool drink and a hot read to cut the burn off the hottest of days -- and this book is as hot as a high noon sun."

. Peter Tyler's successful Wall Street career and suburban life, both seemingly so stable, are ripped apart in an instant when his wife is killed. Each lead he chases to find the killer lands him in more trouble as he questions himself about his enemies and friends. Mark Deakins differentiates the varying characters--Russian bodyguards, a stoic father, a selfish executive, cynical cops, and many others. He expertly conveys the plot's suspense, deftly capturing its diverse emotions, values, and themes. Deakins's voices and distinct accents--from elegant European to streetwise New York--bring together this intriguing story of the bonds of friendship, family secrets, art history, and financial dealing. Some of these murder - mystery novels have so many twists and turns, and unbelievable elements in them, that it's hard to buy into the story line. This book ended up with some of that, but it all snuck up on me and I didn't realize it until the it was over and I thought back on it all. I liked it all the way through, it kept my interest, all the while trying to figure out who the real killer(s) may have been.

Not sure why this book didn't get as much press as Baldacci, but Vance is a better writer! ( )

Read a galley of this the other day and loved it. Great suspense story but also interesting characters and really well written. The ending blew me away. ( )

Relentless suspense.

Successful business man is accused of murdering his estranged wife, but he didn't do it. Under a cloud of suspicion, he loses his job, has to deal with the loss of his wife (who he loved, even though they were estranged), has the police stalking him, etc.

He takes matters into his own hands and the plot gets interesting/twisted. It involves international investing, shady art world deals, drug company research, a complex family secret, infidelity, good cops, bad cops, etc. ( )
