Al, Fergie and the gang (Tanner included) are at their best in this adventure set in Southeast Texas with Al and Fergie facing a dangerous drug cartel. Russ Hall writes beautiful descriptions that will make anyone feel like they are right there in Texas. This book is good clean fun so treat yourself to a great read and get this book. Actually with any book in this series you won't be disappointed they are all great. ( ) Book source ~ Purchased Al Quinn, retired sheriff’s department detective, keeps getting pulled back in to “help” out whenever the Sheriff calls. Al may be a badass but the Sheriff can usually sweet talk him into the odd job. This time, his lady friend, Fergie (retired city detective), doesn’t need to go along and keep Al’s fanny out of the fire. It’s just a little training mission for a new detective. It’s when Al’s on his way home from this “favor” that he sees Fergie with another guy and looking kinda cozy. Wait, wut? Fergie and Al have been through so much together these last few years, nearly going to the great Detective’s Coffee Shop in the sky a couple of times, and spending their down time together. Turns out that Fergie is going out of town to help an old boyfriend whose stepson is missing and suddenly Al wants to give her a hand. Hmmmm…is Al a little jealous? We’re about to find out as the shit hits the fan in Texas. Holy shit! Al and Fergie walk into a hornet’s nest in this one. See what happens when you’re just trying to help an old friend out? AND you aren’t even getting paid?! Damn. Told from several POVs gives this story a nice well-rounded feel. The characters are excellent as usual. The plot about the gang is a tiny bit goofy (or maybe it’s just them that’s goofy), but I forgive it since the action is superb. Also, I mentioned the characters, right? Al is a total hot badass babe and the characters that surround him are always interesting. If you like books about older characters who can kick ass and take names as well as unravel a mystery that’s also sort of a western then look no further. Al will deliver if it kills him. And some day it might. But hopefully not for a long long time. I want Al and Fergie to solve cases for many books to come. Never Look Back In Texas by Russ Hall begins innocently enough with Al Quinn long since retired being asked by Sheriff Clayton to do a little mentoring. He has the experience and despite the grumbling, is ready to help out. He just was not ready to see on his way home hours later, Fergie in deep conservation with a man who clearly is very special to Fergie. Rattled to his core, it takes a while for Al to talk to her only to find out that the clearly intimate conversation was not at all what it seemed. Colin Tansey has a stepson named, Baron Fielding, and the thirty-two-year-old man is missing. Colin, who has known Fergie for nearly forever, wants Fergie’s help as the local cops have done nothing productive so far. Before long, Al is on the mission with Fergie to find Baron and things escalate fast. More than once, Al’s doing a favor for a friend has nearly gotten them both killed. This time, Fergie’s willingness to do a favor for a friend might get them and a lot of other innocent folks killed. The sixth book in the series, Never Look Back In Texas continues to build on the foundation set long ago in To Hell and Gone in Texas. As always, family by biology or extended by way of friendship plays a role in the mystery tale as does plenty of action, bad guys with big guns or small, and the Texas landscape, drought or not. Author Russ Hall has created a fine mystery series where the young guys do not have all the fun. As always, read in order, as the series is one that evolves over time and there are references to earlier events. There is not a bad read in the bunch and the latest installment, Never Look Back In Texas, is another good one. Highly recommended.
