A Witchly Influence is a new book by Stephanie Grey that I got through LT Early Readers.

It's a funny little book about modern witches - the "Bewitched" or even "Bell, Book and Candle" type of witches that use magic for cleaning the house and doing the dishes, but go to Starbucks, drive cars, take hot yoga classes and have romantic adventures.

So OK. Carman is a witch recently divorced from a mortal (A "Mundane") and assigned to work as an "Influencer" to do good work and help people with her powers. So we're kind of in "Touched by an Angel" territory too.

Carman is an engaging character and the book bubbles cheerfully along in a "Real Housewives of Salem Village" kind of mode. And there is time travel and "Fate" and a lot of things going on.

If there's a quibble its that there is just too! much! going on -- the author has thrown everything into the cauldron to see what bubbles. World building is harder than it looks.

But i enjoyed it and if this is a series, I'll be looking out for the next one. ( )

If you're looking for a quick, enjoyable, light read, I would definitely recommend this book. The book starts out with main character Carmen Deveraux splitting with her husband is a rather sassy fashion that I enjoyed, and then follows her on a crazy adventure as she works to live up to the expectations of her new work position. Despite its short length (250 pages on my digital copy), the characters were very well defined, which helped me to connect with them and stay engaged throughout the story.

I gave it only 4 stars instead of 5 because there were a couple of points in the story where time seemed to suddenly pass rapidly and unexpectedly, which caused me to reread a few paragraphs to see if I had missed something. For example, it seems that everyone in Carmen's life is concerned about Finn moving in at first. It is built up to seem like a notable obstacle for her, but then flip the page and it's one month later and everything worked out. No details, just over and done with. There was one other point when she goes back in the past that was a similarly awkward time jump for me, as well.

Other than that, the overall flow of the story was fairly smooth with lots of humor and snark thrown in for added entertainment. This one is definitely worth a read. I was also glad to see that she gave herself a segue at the end of the book into a sequel, so I will be keeping my eye open for that. ( )

Nice feelgood, with magic!
The beginning of the book is good, then the story gets a bit more difficult to read, but after about p. 50 it is fun all over.
The magical touch is nice.
I like the main subject: a young woman who knows what she wants, trying to help other people and not only bending the rules, but succeeding in changing them. ( )

I received this as an Early Reviewer copy in the expectation of an honest review. I really did enjoy this book, it moved smoothly through the story. Carmen Deveraux is a witch, as is her mother, her mother's husband and children do not know this aspect of the Deveraux women, but Carmen's soon (very soon) to be ex husband does. The book commences with Carmen's divorce and her erasing her ex's memory of her being a witch. Carmen works within the witchly world as do her best friends, but outwardly they work within the non-magical world. the work-arounds the magical world has to do to maintain secrecy is quite hilarious.

Carmen is offered the opportunity of becoming an Influencer. This is magical person who guides a non-magical person to their ultimately best life choice. She is working under the vague guidance of fate and has a messenger who is a snowman - a singularly inappropriate entity in the location Carmen lives. There are truly hilarious laugh out loud scenes in this book - I love the use of the neighbour's garden gnomes as waiters. ( )

Ms Grey’s writing style is light-hearted, humorous, and easy to read. Nothing too heavy or thought-provoking; a perfect fit with the cosy genre. Her prose is appropriate for the story and she’s obviously an intelligent woman. The world-building was good and added to the story rather than bog it down.

I loved Carmen’s girlfriends. Siobhan, Tess and Enid each had different personalities but were fabulous and exhibited the traits that I love. The scenes of friendly banter between the four women was hilarious. They were supportive, loyal and had some brilliant ideas to help Carmen out. Just what besties do. There were lots of characters I really liked in this book and liked to hate. ( )
