The Americans: the most self-centered, enthusiastic, discontented spiritual materialists in history. We all swore we wouldn’t spend our whole lives arguing, bickering, and laughing at dumb shit. But we do. We used up our freedom of assembly to line up for new Yeezys. We used our free speech to curse out umpires and refs. Technology to jerk off to. We used our literacy to read comment sections. Do you know how many books Tolstoy sold last year? Probably three. Meanwhile there’s a YouTube video of a wedding party falling off a dock that got seven million views. Another couple of billion for a fish playing cards with a goat. When you set up a country and say free buffet, you can’t complain when everybody ignores the steamed vegetables. Well, that’s the history of America. It was decent people trying to escape their past and not realizing you can never escape your past; it follows you and ruins your credit rating. Started in the twentieth century, real estate in New York was actually simple. Follow the gays. You could walk around the neighborhood and ask a resident, “What’d you think of the Tonys last night?” If they say that Judith Light got robbed, you should invest. | |
