I decided to read the Temperance Brennan books after watching the television show Bones. The two are similar but also very different, I enjoy both. Kathy Reichs has a very detailed but still interesting writing style. I do not understand all of the technical jargon but that does not detract from my reading enjoyment. Tempe and Ryan are great characters and my favorite parts of the books are when they are in a scene together especially if it is out in "the field" ( )

Tonya Wizlawski (sp?) is a great character that I hope we'll see in future books.
Gotta love the series, despite the outrageously improbable coincidences.
We always learn so much - this time vaccines, gene editing, and more.

Cons - contains spoilers:
Am I losing track of characters? Ann in Charleston) is supposedly Tempe's best friend, but I don't recall her from earlier books.
What the heck - there's not a single mention of Skinny Slidell, who is Ryan's detective business partner! ( )

This 20th addition to the long-running Temperance Brennan series continues with the story of Tempe and her friends and family. As in all the others, the book moves along fairly quickly and it is not long before Tempe finds herself in a global crisis, that she has to try to unravel. Using her considerable brain she gets to work. In this book she is back and forth from Montreal and South Carolina a lot. The first half of the book was a solid 4 stars for me. I like the fact that Tempe has slowed down a bit now that Ryan is in her life. I like the softer, less impetuous Tempe. In this book Tempe is trying to put a name to a mother and daughter murdered pair from ten years ago that occurred in Canada, and the more recent find of two teenage girls whose bodies turned up in South Carolina during a hurricane. At about Chapter 19, the book stalled out for me because of all the scientific information and 4-letter acronyms mostly entering around genealogy. I was having trouble wading through all this. I have to admit that I skimmed quite a bit at this point. At around Chapter 27 I had figured out who the psychopathic and diabolical murderer was, and I had even roughed out the motive in my mind. Then I was basically waiting for Tempe to figure it out. The last half of the book was a low 3 stars for me (thus my 3 /12 * rating) I wouldn't recommend this book unless you have read a few Temperance Brennan books already. I will read the next book in the series simply because I want to see where Tempe will go from here, and to see how her relationship with Ryan is going. ( )

It has been interesting reading how authors have incorporated Covid into their book plots. This is the third mystery/thriller in a row I have read that does just that, all with the Covid crisis being used by unscrupulous people who have something to gain. The way of the world, greed ever present.

Had a hard time at times with this story. Although the premise was good, and I still enjoy Tempe and Ryan, I found myself bogged down by all the details. Genetics, not my forte and the technical explanations were quite detailed. Too detailed, as I felt myself often forgetting where I was with the main storyline. Then again, my concentration level seems to be suffering lately, so I'll leave it at that. ( )

Bones, the series, is finished; it is time to get back to Brennan. If you have seen the videos now you should read Kathy Reichs' books. This latest installment is a really good one as Tempe needs to make sense of similar crimes a thousand miles apart and a time-lapse of fifteen years. Good historic forensic analysis blended with strong connections to more current but relevant science keeps the plot moving briskly. Lots of interesting characters, good and bad, play great supporting roles. ( )
