I really liked the cover art with some of the images being glossy and embossed.

The book was geared to a younger audience than I expected, ages 10-14. It is however a nice story for young teens in that age group. I thought that the story idea was very creative. As stated in my first impression, I liked the concept of a character basically coming to life and interacting with the book's protagonist! This book would make for a nice Christmas gift for a young reader into fantasy stories connected to modern day. Most readers will be able to relate to the book's characters for sure. While the story is a fantasy, characters face many of the same issues that most readers also face in the daily lives growing up. It appears as if this book will be a part of a series. I think that this first book will hook most readers and have them coming back for the second when it comes out. ( )

Reads like a first draft

After seeing the gorgeous cover and reading the first look, I couldn't wait to dive into my first book by this author. Filomena was instantly likeable to me and as someone who always had her eyes inside a book growing up, I connected to her love of a great series and characters. But this is where my enjoyment of this book ended.

The idea behind this book is exciting, but the implementation didn't work for me. Everything felt two dimensional and like stereotypical fairy tale plots. Filomena's parents were lovely, but I felt it was unbelievable how they adopted Filomena. I was so tempted to give up and not finish reading this book, but I really wanted to post an honest review based on reading the entire book. I did like Filomena and some of the silly humor and word play. However, the characters never had difficulties solving problems and the solutions fell flat and were so boring and very much a let down to the "buildup" of the conflict. The ending was super disappointing and I won't be reading more of this series. ( )

A book that many lovers of fairy tales and fantasy could easily imagine being in. Filomena's adoptive parents keep her tightly leashed, school is a hurtful place and the one thing she lives for is a twelve volume fantasy series that's almost more real than her world. The final book in the series is about to hit bookstores and it's the very first time her parents have let her off the leash. When she arrives at the bookstore, devastating news awaits. The book has never been delivered to the publisher and the author has vanished. On her way home, she's followed by a mysterious boy who she discovers is one of the main characters in the series. While that would be hard to swallow, it's topped by a magical attack and in short order, she and the mystery boy realize they must find a way back to his world, the one she's come to love while reading the series. What happens after is a dandy blend of mixup, mishap, snark and discovery. It's a fun, fast read and one many libraries should add to their collection. ( )

#FirstLine - Once upon a time in the days of old, eleven fairies gathered at court before a child to hold.

I loved this book so much. I loved the nod to so many beloved characters from nursery rhymes and other stories I adore from childhood. I loved the adventure and fantasy. I loved the story with so many important themes for young readers; being proud of who you are and where you come from, being brave and taking on challenges, the importance of reading, the fact that friendship is earned not blindly given, that things are not always as they appear and so much more. I am really hoping that another book is being written for this series, as the ending seemed to leave it open. I truly want more. This would be a great book to read together as a family because everyone from young reader to adults will love it. I highly recommend this book!!! ( )
