I read this book in the genre that was my favorite for a long time. Horror. I now lean more toward psychological thriller/suspense/mystery. I believe that I expected something from this book that didn't happen for me. That's not to say don't read it....I have read some amazing reviews prior to reading the book and I have figured out that it is one of those books that will grab some readers and carry them to the end and that others, like myself, will get there in a different fashion.
I did like the way the story was told, in alternating chapters by the mother and the child. The father, although central to the book, was viewed through the eyes of his wife and his child.
I just honestly felt that there was too much unnecessary adversity. I understand it is a novel and that things are not going to be as realistic as they should be, but I just felt it was over the top at some points and for that reason, I couldn't be as invested as I might have been. If you are confused now, that's how I felt at several junctures.
The writing itself is good, and I hope the author continues to write. I will read another book she writes. (
