A fun old-school folk tale, full of predictable tropes and stock characters which starts out strong but gets a bit laboured after the halfway point. Reminscent of Dickens being paid per installment, this book goes on for far too long because of the circumstances under which it was first presented to the public. ( )

I have to preface this by saying - no I don't support JK Rowling and her deluded thoughts on transgendered people. I felt icky for even reading this, I had to completely separate the author from her work. That being said, I did enjoy the story and I thought it had a good moral lessons and was an overall good kids story. I also loved that children were the illustrators; it added a little extra whimsy and fun. The Ickabog is about monsters and kings, deceptive advisors, loyalty, friendship, and tall tales. What happens when a King swears he saw a monster? A monster that killed the captain of his guard - what happens if it was all a hoax? How wrapped up can the kingdom get? How can one lie hurt everyone? Scarily relevant and timely. ( )

Honestly? It was rather boring... And this book seemed confused about the age of its audience. I don't know if children will pick up the political undertones, and I doubt many adults will find the plot thrilling - this sort of story has been told before, and better.

Also, there were a LOT of character deaths... Granted they were mostly minor characters, but still... Sensitive children might be put off by that. ( )

What a brilliant book! It meant to be a children's book, and yet it is perfect for adults too. You can easily finished the whole book within couple of days because the story is really interesting. It makes you so curious to know what is going to happen next. I know 2020 has been a tough year, and this book is able to give readers some sort of fun and pleasure. The children's drawings that have been attached into the book makes it becomes more adorable. Can't wait for it to turn out into an epic adventure film. Imagine Luke Evans as King Fred; Emily Blunt as Lady Eslanda, Tom Hiddleston as Captain Goodfellow; Mckenna Grace as Daisy; and Noah Jupe as Bert... Oh dear please make it happens!

My second Rowling book of the year, after the sublime [b:Troubled Blood|51807232|Troubled Blood (Cormoran Strike, #5)|Robert Galbraith|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1594301752l/51807232._SY75_.jpg|65370539]. This one was a story I figured I wouldn't enjoy quite as much, primarily because it's aimed at people about 48 years younger than I am.

Still, it was good. It was predictable, it had familiar tropes. It was sort of her version of Stephen King's [b:The Eyes of the Dragon|10611|The Eyes of the Dragon|Stephen King|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1166254286l/10611._SY75_.jpg|3083085], but not quite. For one thing, it was a hell of a lot better.

I read it and know what's coming, what each of those characters represent, but I kept reminding myself that this would all likely be untrodden ground for a ten-year-old, and tried to see it through those eyes.

What I got is a story about loyalty and friendship and pushing back hard against what's wrong and standing up for what you believe in. And if your kid is gonna read something, those are good things to read about. ( )

The Ickabog is dedicated to:
Mackenzie Jean, who favorite story it always was and who urged me for a decade to write it up properly;

Megan Barnes and Patrick Barnes in everlasting memory of Lisa Cheesecake and the Llama;

and, of course, to two wonderful Daisies, Daisy Goodwin and Daisy Murray, proud daughters of the QSC.
