Have tolerated this volume. I won't say it is a bad manga but there is nothing holding me back to it. The protagonist hops from one story to another. The flashback is emotional but too short to leave a lasting impression. If this was not THE FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST , I don't think I would have come back for more.
The slapstick comedy eventually did make me giggle . That saved this volume a star.
This volume , as a whole , progressed quickly and felt scattered , which in a way is representative of the theme of this volume; the Elric brothers' searching for something. I hope this is not the theme of the entire series. ( )

I loved Silver Spoon, so I thought it was time to try out the creator's most famous series. I have the first six volumes on hand from the library.

I must say, this first outing does not do much to impress me. The main character, Edward Elric, is a bratty and cocky rogue, his brother Alphonse is a nonentity (in more than one way), and most of the other characters are bare sketches, with one-dimensional villains like the one-offs -- a religious fraud and an evil mine company owner -- and some who are part of a larger cabal fashioned after the Seven Deadly Sins. Elric's fellow militarized alchemists appear too briefly to judge what they might be like.

This has pilot written all over it, and I remember I had some reservations about the first volume of Silver Spoon so I'm comfortable charging on with the series despite my initial disappointment. But I do know that I prefer slice-of-life over epic fantasy, so there is a chance I may not make it past this first stack. ( )

I had heard about this manga and I finally decided to read it.

It was okay. I now know what a fullmetal alchemist is (an alchemist who is partly machine). The story line was okay - the alchemist brothers are taking a trip across the country getting into various adventures (and saving various people) while looking for the philosopher's stone to help undo some of what they have inadvertently done.

I am interested in reading more of this series but not compelled to read it right away. ( )

A fantastic series opener to one of the most layered, astounding mangas I've ever read. The whole story continues to blow me away.

Edward and Alphonse Elric are a very unlikely pair of brothers; one a diminutive (sorry Ed!), fierce-eyed young man, the other a full-body suit of armor that contains only a soul. Both are alchemists, able to break down and reshape the material of the world around them for purposes of both healing and destruction...but only if the trade is equivalent.

When they were young, Ed and Al tampered with the most basic law of alchemy, which forbids the resurrection or creation of human beings. Ed paid with a literal arm and leg; his brother with his entire body. In order to restore themselves, they will need to unlock the secrets of alchemy's Holy Grail...the Philosopher's Stone. This is their story, and the story of a civilization beset by war, a military of both corruption and loyalty, a world where strange beings haunt the shadows, warriors seek vengeance, and alchemists work for good, for evil, and many in the gray areas between.

This series is the equal of any "book," in its stunningly portrayed characters, its fantastic art, its winding storyline, its spectrum of emotions, and its deep, thoughtful commentary on humanity, death, religion, sin, good, evil, and the soul. ( )

It's ironic that we scientists..who don't believe in God..are in a sense the closest things tohim.
Followers are just pawns to use for war.
