While Yael and Christa’s stories form a major part of the plot, Barry also lets readers view events through Kuhn and Zwillman’s eyes. Although the characters sometimes border on caricature and the less acceptable parts of Zwillman’s mob activities are not mentioned, that doesn’t get in the way of what is an increasingly dramatic and moving tale. Readers may be disturbed by the activities that occurred in camps devoted to Nazifying young Americans, but they portray the veneration and dedication of those who accepted Hitler as a type of personal savior. “Newark Minutemen” features a little known and very important part of American history that still resonates today.

The story has a powerful premise that revolves around a forbidden love. But what makes this tale most interesting are the political hints and historical elements woven into it. Leslie K. Barry evokes a moment when America was very vulnerable, with enemies at her doorstep. The vigilance, intelligence, and bravery of the boxers are laudable traits that are characteristic of true patriotism. The setting is brilliantly constructed and expertly written, transporting readers to an America weakened by the Depression. The prose is gorgeous and the narrative is as suspenseful as it can get. Newark Minutemen is a fascinating tale of romance, revenge, and patriotism that features courageous patriots rising to defend America. This novel is as enthralling as any thriller, and as hard to put down, written with strong plot threads and a suspenseful romance that keeps readers on the edge of their seats.

In the years before World War II, many German Americans had sworn allegiance to Hitler. Goose-stepping down Main Street, waving swastika banners, sending their kids to Nazi summer camps in upstate New York, the German American Bund was an insidious domestic force in the 1930s.

As Tiburon novelist Leslie K. Barry learned, not everyone took it lying down.

In New Jersey, for example, the FBI, the Jewish mob and some tough-as-nails Jewish boxers formed the Newark Minutemen. Their mission: Deliver knockout blows to the neighborhood Nazis, with a larger goal of disrupting their effectiveness at gaining sympathizers.

It may sound like fantasy, but Barry’s new novel tells the true story of American Jewish boxers in the years leading up to World War II, who played an active role in fighting Nazism in the US.

inspired by her Uncle Harry, who was a Newark Minutemen boxer in the 1930s, before World War II. Jewish mob boss Abner “Longie” Zwillman, who has been called the Al Capone of New Jersey, recruited the boxers to work with the FBI.

The author consulted her family and FBI reports in order to write the story, which follows a Jewish boxer as he goes undercover during the Great Depression to thwart a shadow Nazi Party in the U.S. as Hitler becomes more powerful in Europe.

Between 1910 and 1940, boxing was the most popular sport in America. Jewish boxers dominated the sport with 20,000 registered fighters and twenty-six world championships. During the 1930s in Newark, NJ, these boxers were recruited by Mob King Longie Zwillman and trained by champion fighter Nat Arno to help the FBI fight a Hitler-shadow party of Nazis taking over America.

YAEL: Madison Square Garden. New York, USA

If we fail today, we might as well throw in the towel.
My ears hammer against the roarin’ crowd. We must stop the rallying call for a Nazi Party in America. The last thing we need in the middle of the Depression is a fascist party here to support the one the Nazis are building in Germany. Everyone’s still nursin’ their wounds from the Great War.
I catch the cold iron bar—the one I spent all night sawin’ off with my hacksaw—on the first bounce. But the clank it makes between Sieg Heil chants signals our death warrant. My heart freezes as I scan forty-thousand blinkin’ eyes around the arena. I wonder which ones have read through my fake salute? Blood thrusts through my veins like water loadin’ in a fire hose. I almost vomit. Dangit! I’m my own worst enemy.
The pumpin’ in my body mounts like a geyser ready to blow. Right here and now, maybe I should grab my fellow fighters and exit the Germandom defiling the Garden. Yes. Madison Square Garden. New York City, USA. The last time I was here I was sixteen and my best pal, Harry Levine, knocked out another heavyweight to win the 1936 Golden Glove. Now, just three years later, the Bund’s American Führer, Fritz Kuhn, is celebrating Der Tag—The Day—on Washington’s birthday in the most iconic American arena we have.
