"International bestselling author Ken Follett has enthralled millions of readers with The Pillars of the Earth and World Without End, two stories of the Middle Ages set in the fictional city of Kingsbridge. The saga now continues with Follett's magnificent new epic, A Column of Fire. In 1558, the ancient stones of Kingsbridge Cathedral look down on a city torn apart by religious conflict. As power in England shifts precariously between Catholics and Protestants, royalty and commoners clash, testing friendship, loyalty, and love. Ned Willard wants nothing more than to marry Margery Fitzgerald. But when the lovers find themselves on opposing sides of the religious conflict dividing the country, Ned goes to work for Princess Elizabeth. When she becomes queen, all Europe turns against England. The shrewd, determined young monarch sets up the country's first secret service to give her early warning of assassination plots, rebellions, and invasion plans. Over a turbulent half century, the love between Ned and Margery seems doomed as extremism sparks violence from Edinburgh to Geneva. Elizabeth clings to her throne and her principles, protected by a small, dedicated group of resourceful spies and courageous secret agents"--… (mere)

A Column of Fire is a historical novel. It is a very long story about the fight of England allowing religious freedom that is, Protestants being allowed to worship. There were many bloody conflicts by the Catholics to keep the Protestants out of England wherein they got Spain to bring in her ships to kill all Protestants. There is much English history to be learned in this book. Four stars were given in this review. ( )

I think Follett forgot he made Kingsbridge the home of his Kingsbridge books. Either that, or this was a merge with another historical fiction book he really wanted to write. We spend as much time dealing with France as we do England, and the drama of protestant revolution, Mary & Liz, all tenuously tied to Kingsbridge but not by much. There's also a formula he uses with primary and secondary romance plots, moustache twirling villains, but it seemed more rote here than in previous entries.

When you write a book that's 2-3 times as long as the average book, that also demands the result be a cut above the rest to justify the investment. This is very skippable in an otherwise great series. ( )

Review: A Column of Fire by Ken Follett 4* 04/17/2023

I am familiar with Ken Follett's writing and I have him placed at the top of my list. I have read the two books before this one in the series. This is another one of his great works. I like reading historical stories and I'm familiar with the format. This book kept me interested to the very end. The characters were well-developed and the dialogue between characters was interesting and inviting.
There were some graphic scenes of horror and violence throughout the book but it was expected because of the place and era. Follett didn't leave much out and the organization was on the spot. In a story with war, bloodshed, conspiracy, and royalty, such as Queen Elizabeth, and the Catholic and Protestant beliefs there is a lot to read and keep knowledge of whos who in the story comes together with astounding overwhelming events and emotions. Sylvie's character was wonderful as was Ned Willard who enhances the story to keep the reader moving along and understanding everything that's going on. I can't wait to move on to the next book in the Kingsbridge series. ( )

If you are a Kingsbridge fan, you already know how the story will end - the good will eventually triumph over evil but the latter will keep trying till he is vanquished. The plot will be interspersed with romance and a bit of lust. Nevertheless, it is still an enjoyable read. But you do need a bit of patience to see how the various threads are linked together. ( )
