I didn’t enjoy this one quite as much as the first, but I was surprised to find I really liked the ending. The author shakes things up and the plot was missing some of the chemistry of the first book, but I still enjoyed it. Nina seemed to take a backseat & Daphne was predictable, but I really enjoyed the sisters’ connection.

“If, if, if. It frightened Beatrice a little, that the world was built on so many if‘s that decided people’s fates.” ( )

My rating is really a 3.5 stars. I really loved the first book and Beatrice. Thankfully I still loved Beatrice in this one and fell in love with Teddy even more. At first I did kind of hate the switching of couples but then it started falling in to place nicely. If you think about it Teddy and Sam didn't have much of a relationship. They had a moment which was nice but that was no reason for Sam to go so crazy about it. Nina was a little better in this book. I feel sorry for how much she was messed with but I think she'll be alright. My main pet peeve with this book is the lack of karma for Daphne. I get that she realizes that she loves Ethan and then loses him but I'm sorry she deserves WAY more than just that after all she did. I mean she even got her best friend back. She was just the worse and I needed more retribution for that. Jeffery needed to be enlighten about Daphne's true self. So it was ok. I was definitely expecting better but worth the read if you've read the first one. ( )

Sweet book, though tough to follow up on American Royals. Interesting to read this book, with a fictionalized American monarchy and Washington D.C. during the shenanigans that occurred at the US Capitol this week. ( )

The first book in this series was, for me, a fairly solid mindless YA read, so I thought it would be fun to read the second as stress relief. Yikes. I got 60% of the way through and was not enjoying myself, so I skipped ahead and read the ending, was still not impressed, and decided to call it a day.

It is excruciatingly clear from the very beginning of this book that none of the characters in this book are happy. (The book picks up more or less where the first book left off.) Literally from the first 30 pages, it was very clear that everyone was unhappy, and there were so many obvious communication breakdowns everywhere. In the first book, the level of petty drama was kind of fun in a mindless stress-relief kind of way, but here, it was just annoying.

The first book also leads you to hope for and want particular romantic pairings amongst the main characters. But somehow all of those are totally discarded in this book??? I think that at least one of these changes, probably two, was for the better, but I emphatically disagree with some of them. It's also tremendously frustrating that certain characters seem(???) to never get their due, even in cases of comically one-dimensional characters whose seeming only purpose at the outset is to ultimately get what's owed to them.
