"From bestselling and eight-time Christy Award-winning author Lynn Austin comes a remarkable novel of sisterhood and self-discovery set against the backdrop of WWII. 1950. In the wake of the war, Audrey Clarkson leaves her manor house in England for a fresh start in America with her young son. As a widowed war bride, Audrey needs the support of her American in-laws, whom she has never met. But she arrives to find that her longtime friend Eve Dawson has been impersonating her for the past four years. Unraveling this deception will force Audrey and Eve's secrets-and the complicated history of their friendship-to the surface. 1940. Eve and Audrey have been as different as two friends can be since the day they met at Wellingford Hall, where Eve's mother served as a lady's maid for Audrey's mother. As young women, those differences become a polarizing force . . . until a greater threat-Nazi invasion-reunites them. With London facing relentless bombardment, Audrey and Eve join the fight as ambulance drivers, battling constant danger together. An American stationed in England brings dreams of a brighter future for Audrey, and the collapse of the class system gives Eve hope for a future with Audrey's brother. But in the wake of devastating loss, both women must make life-altering decisions that will set in motion a web of lies and push them both to the breaking point long after the last bomb has fallen. This sweeping story transports readers to one of the most challenging eras of history to explore the deep, abiding power of faith and friendship to overcome more than we ever thought possible"--… (mere)

If I could give more than 5 stars I would. I couldn't put this book down and I was really sad when it ended. I wanted it to go on and on. Excellent setting and exceptional characters. A must read! ( )

Where to start...I just finished this intense novel set in England during WWII. This was a split-time novel going back and forth between the 1930-40’s in England and 1950’s in America. An incredible story of friendship, love, loss & faith during the heartache of war.
Eve Dawson and Audrey Clarkson are about as different as two can be, yet God brought them together for a lifetime journey. It was great watching each one of them grow, change, fail, and recover from so many trials over the years.
God has a path for each one of us. Lynn Austin quotes this verse in the back of the book, “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10
I loved this book and can’t wait for her next book! ( )

I just didn't like either of the two main characters enough to hope for a happy ending for either of them. By writing it in 2 timelines, it creates the illusion of more suspense than the story actually has. If you read it in chronological order, the weakness of the post-war timeline is revealed.

This wonderful tale has its beginning with the unlikely friendship of Eve, the child of a lady’s maid, and Audrey, the child of the lady. Though as different as night and day, they soon see that they have the ability to fulfill what is lacking in the other, even as children. They are best friends, at least as close as the class difference will allow, until as adolescents, their activities pull them apart. When war breaks out, they again become close, volunteering for the war effort. Bolstering each other, they survive the atrocities that they witness as ambulance drivers as well as injuries to themselves when caught by a bomb. They both suffer other loses, and in desperation, Eve does something unthinkable to save herself. And just a few short years later, it all comes crashing down around her. This is a tremendous tale of relationships, of romance, of deceit, of love, of forgiveness, and more. And it’s all masterfully woven into an engrossing story that captured my interest from the beginning. The characters are well developed, and likable, and their flaws only make them more real. It’s one of better stories I’ve read that is set during the Second World War in England. Recommended for anyone who just likes good historical fiction. ( )

As soon as I read the sequel to this book, I knew I had to go back and read this. Lynn Austin writes brutal stories—brutally honest, brutally revealing, and far too gripping for my own good. She made me empathize with the characters—to the point of tearing up at times (which is saying something, because I NEVER cry)! The way the war affected innocent people was a stunning reminder of how blessed we are to have not had to go through what they did, but the hope woven through the story made me want to cheer. There are some hard parts in this story, but they’re handled with a compassion and gentleness I admire. She made me see why the characters made the decisions they did—and then how the results of their decisions affected them, both for good and for bad.

I came away blessed and encouraged by this book. Another well-written historical story with a twist. ( )
