Predictable and long, but somehow I didn’t mind?

There was one thing that happened WRT to the MMC keeping a massive secret until after they’d had sex (her first time) and I could have done without that. I get it’s supposed to be a big betrayal, but it’s used so often and feels so unconsensual that I have a harder time forgiving a character after they do that. Also he murders a lot of people, so there’s that.

You can probably guess most of the CWs, but one note for a sadist Duke who has abused the MC for years and allowed a creepy aristo to join in and get off on it. (That guy also corners her and gropes her at one point. Later she hacks him to pieces with a sword.) ( )

“Not everything was a lie, Poppy. Not everything.”

4.5/5 stars! Loved this book! Great world building and character development to set up the rest of the series. Contained many of my favorite tropes. Unfortunately, Booktok ruined the major plot twist in this book so I found it rather predictable. Additionally, this book was mostly Poppy’s inner monologue and I kept wishing for more dialogue. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and couldn’t put it down. Great for fans of the Twilight series looking for a more adult vampire series to read. ( )

“Nothing is ever simple. And when it is, it's rarely every worth it.”

After being bombarded by this book/series on BookTok I wasn't sure what to expect.

But overall I enjoyed this book: the story, the twists, all of it.

All throughout the book I had questions about the Ascended, the Rite etc. and dang did I not see how this book was going to answer them. But it sure did.

Consider me a hooked (as of now - will update my ruling after I continue reading this series). ( )

probably 3.5-3.75 stars but I did enjoy this. This is my first book by this author and I'm glad I have finally read one!

As pointed out by other reviewers, this did start pretty slow. I read the first 40% or so in one sitting and I'm glad I did because not a lot happens during that time and I think it would have been hard to pick up again if I had put it down in the middle of that section. After the 50% mark, the plot does pick up a lot. I wish that the action was spaced out a bit more. I understand the need for some world building at the beginning of a fantasy book but the last 20% was really packed full of stuff and I wish it was a bit more spread out. I especially feel this way because I didn't even really find the world building to be that great. There were a few sections that were quite info-dumping and there were still a lot I didn't understand. I know some people didn't like how anachronistic the world felt. It is hard to place it in the timeline of our world but since this is fantasy, I'm willing to forgive this. My bigger issue was the fact that I still had so many questions about the world.

I definitely did enjoy the plot once it started to pick up. This book sort of walks a line between fantasy romance and paranormal romance and I enjoyed that. The author is clearly pulling from other fantasy books but I didn't have a problem with that. This was a lot more dramatic and high stakes than I was expecting. I liked the escalation throughout the plot even though the end did feel a bit chaotic. A lot of surprises in the plot weren't that surprising to me because I think you could figure most of them out if you can recognize trends in fantasy romance and the way the plot moves. However, the lack of surprise didn't bother me because it was still entertaining.

The romance was good. I was pretty ambivalent about Poppy and I still am. She's written as being brave and I think she is but she is also a sort of religious figure in this world. This meant she was very sheltered and ignorant of a lot of things. This very sheltered heroine is not a favorite of mine and so I think really impacted how I viewed her character. Also, the way she reacted to everything that happened at the end made her feel a bit silly to me. I did like Hawke a lot. I thought he was an interesting character and a compelling love interest. I basically predicted the twist for him at the end but I liked that story line for him and I'm interested to see how that continues in later books. As a couple, I liked it but I think it's still too early for me to really judge. This is very slow burn and obviously, the reveals at the end of this book will clearly throw a wrench in their relationship. This book definitely made me intrigued and I want to see how the relationship continues to develop.

I'm hoping to get to book two before book three comes out so I can read that one right away. I'm trying to do a better job with reading series and the best way I've found I can do that is by reading books as they come out. This book is pretty long but it read really quickly and it only took me two days to get through so hopefully the next book will be just as compulsively readable! ( )

This series has been the best that JLA has written so far. Somehow this is better than Lux, Covenant and The Dark Elements series! ( )

Fear and bravery are often one and the same. It either makes you a warrior or a coward. The only difference is the person it resides inside.
Death is like an old friend who pays a visit, sometimes when it’s least expected and other times when you’re waiting for her. It’s neither the first nor the last time she’ll pay a visit, but that doesn’t make any death less harsh or unforgiving.
Nothing is ever simple. And when it is, it's rarely every worth it.
When you listen to me, I think the stars will fall.
Bravery and strength do not equal goodness.
