Note: I received a digital review copy from the publisher through NetGalley. ( ) Miro and his new friend Zia live in a small, but very successful fishing town. The town has a secret and it’s a big one. Micro and Zia are on a mission to unravel their seaside town’s greatest mystery. The story begins when bookworm, Miro is challenged by bullies as he leaves his favorite bookstore. Here is where he meets Zia, his rescuer. Almost immediately, the two stumble upon a mysterious, otherworldly happening. Miro and Zia are hooked on the mystery after seeing a local fisherman whose leg is ensnared by cephalopodlike tentacles. They begin to explore Aurora’s mysterious history, including the Danforth family patriarch who founded the town’s primary employer. How do they catch so many fish here? That is mysterious key and there are those who will go to any length to protect the secret that keeps Aurora’s economy booming. The narrative itself swings back and forth from the present to the past, with the historical event when Shackleton’s ship was frozen in ice for months during an Antarctic expedition. A little mystery, a little fantasy and a smattering of history here. Graphic novel set in a small fishing town where strange things are happening. Miro is slowly and secretly selling off the "junk" in his father's attic for money to buy books to read. When in town to carry out his clandestine plans, he runs into Zia from his school taking photos. The two teenagers then witness a man being brought in to the town with his leg covered in tentacles. Zia tells Miro that she thinks something strange is happening in the town because there seems to be an "Us" versus "Them" mentality between the townspeople and any outsiders. (Note : Miro and Zia are both new to the town). Zia convinces Miro to act like he is in one of his adventure books and help her investigate the fish factory and then a secret club called the Order of the Sea. Their investigations cause them to uncover a secret book with terrible powers and incur the wrath of the Mayor of Aurora and members of the Order of the Sea. Nicely drawn and free flowing narrative that starts a bit bumpy until you work out that Miro lives in an area where people catch boats like taxis (i.e. the ferry) and that his Dad basically leaves him to his own devices every day so he can get up to all sorts of mischief. Would appeal to graphic novel fans and those students who like supernatural mysteries. ingen anmeldelser | tilføj en anmeldelse
