MackLewis: While not a "ghost" mystery; still a mystery that is wholesome and family friendly with a lot of descriptive writing on nature. It certainly has that late fifties, early sixties appeal when families were tighter-knit and did things together.

I remember reading this book when I was a boy and loved it so much I put it away for safe keeping. I read this book to my daughters when they were young and they loved it too. It has a wholesome atmosphere; like back in the late fifties and early sixties when families were respectable. The main character, Ted, never fights with his parents, he is happy on their new farm, and leads a wonderful and comfortable life in his parent's old farm house.

Mary Steele's (Wilson Gage)descriptions of nature are excellent as a foil to the excitement generated from the "ghost" in the old barn at night. Ted begins his vacation with big plans; his sister will be away and his best friend Steven will be over to help him explore the surrounding acreage. But Ted's plans are ruined when Steven gets the mumps, and his younger quirky twin cousins are sent to stay with Ted while their parents are off to Jamaica.

Ted doesn't much like Bobbin and Winkie, but his summer vacation--although it isn't what he expected--turns out to be the best he ever had. In the end he also learns that his weird cousins aren't so bad after all as they eventually become interesting companions during their summer adventure. ( )

Face to Face!
The thing was surrounded by a sort of dim glow. Ted thought that was the worst part. It stood for several minutes framed in the doorway. And then slowly it began to move--straight toward Ted! He knew it couldn't see him, or at least he didn't think it could. It came closer and closer, shining softly and horribly. Ted would have yelled, only he was so scared he couldn't get enough breath to yell. It was like one of those ghastly dreams in which you want terribly to move only you can't. For a minute he hoped it was a nightmare, but he knew darn well it wasn't....

The Unexpected Phantom!
Ted had looked forward to spring vacation on the rambling old farm his parents had bought in what once had been Cherokee country. He wanted to find the fox's den and maybe even dig up some arrowheads. But that was before he learned that his twin cousins were coming to visit. Hoping to keep Winkie and Bobbin indoors and out of his vacation plans, Ted decided to scare them with ghost stories. Then he is astonished to find there are weird goings-on in the old barn--including a mysterious headless shape that glows in the dark! Ted and the twins decide to investigate, so one night they set out to explore the barn as it looms dark and ominous on the hill...

Winkie went on. "But we saw something come out of the barn and go greeping off. It was black and hunched up. It was kind of awful."
"It didn't have a head," Bobbin recalled. "Or legs or anything. It was just a kind of shape."
A little shiver ran down Ted's back. He couldn't help it. Maybe it was the way Winkie said "greeping" instead of "creeping."
